Describe your ultimate smartphone...

What would be your ultimate phone?

The more I search for a smartphone, the more I realize that what I want is just not out there.

Here is what I want:

 • Start with a "thin and cool" case like say the Nokia N9/Lumia 800.
 • 4.0" Super AMOLED screen with over 330 DPI resolution.
 • Dual-Core 1Ghz CPU/GPU or faster (Tegra?).
 • 1+ GB of on board RAM.
 • 16+ GB of on board storage.
 • MicroSD slot for storage expansion.
 • Dual-SIM capability.
 • Quad-Band GSM.
 • Penta-Band 3G: HSPDA 850/900/1700/1900/2100.
 • Android 4.0 ICS (straight from Google).
 • High-End DAC from Wolfson (Cowon) for superior audio quality.
 • 8.0 Mpx CMOS main camera (from Sony/Nikon or Canon)
 • 1-2.0 Mpx CMOS front-facing camera.
 • A good 18+ hours of solid battery life with normal/casual use.
 • UNDECIDED: Slide-Out QWERTY keyboard.
 • UNDECIDED: Added 4G functionality.

My dream phone:

-4.5 Inch SAMOLED HD Plus (that is 720p non-pentile) screen
-Quad-core SoC with a PS3's gaming power
-2GB ram
-Micro SDXC compatibility
-12 MP camera
-User replaceable battery
-No locked bootloader running Android
-At least as thin as my SGS2

I hope to buy a phone with roughly these specs in 2013 or 2014.

I would love to be able to buy a phone exactly like the one I have (18 month old HTC Desire), but with enough battery capacity so that I don't have to disable every damned thing (WiFi/Bluetooth/3G/turn screen brightness all the way down/still charge it every day.)

All the new phones just go faster to use up any additional battery technology they invent. Makes no sense >_<

i'd basically go with something like this with a body made of say brushed aluminum with a rubberized rear battery cover.

so basically some cross between the current galaxy nexus, and the current rezound the 2 phones i currently have in my posession.

the sad thing is it COULD be built today. with say an 8mp camera, and maybe an IPS LCD like the nitro HD instead of an amoled HD plus (which no phone has right now so if we are going to go with things already in currently existing phones / devices) or the rezound's s-lcd pmva. If i had to pick a cpu today it'd be the samsung xynos in the SGS2 gsm also. or a tegra3 if it wasnt a huge battery life issue.

given how thin and light the g nexus is, i'd actually make it say .75oz heavier and 1-2 mm thicker or so (so say 11mm thick, about htc sensation thickness), make the stock battery say 2400mah. i'd give up the ruberrized back / aluminum body to hit these weight targets. samsung or someone make this happen.

GSM Phone with good voice quality like Nokia or Motorola

Build - Nokia Lumia like
Screen - Super AMOLED HD Plus 1280 x 720 resolution, 4.5- 5 inches, Gorilla Glass covered.
Processor - Exynos 5250
OS - ICS, but with Palm Pre like multitasking (the part below the screen is touch sensitive and should trigger multitasking card view)
Camera - Samsung or the Nokia module with Carl Zeiss lens. Dual Xenon and LED flash (I can dream, can't I? 😛 )
2GB RAM, 32 -64 GB, Nokia N91 like sound quality through earphones, removable battery.

Doesn't have to be RAZR thin, I am willing to accommodate some thickness for Xenon flash and a bigger battery.

So the even bigger question is, why won't any of the manufacturers ever make our perfect phones? Either today or tomorrow?

We know they CAN but they don't.

Hmm, future superphone technology aside, here's an exhaustive list of I'd like using purely current and available technology:

GSM pentaband (GNex)
Unlockable bootloader

4.65" 720p Super AMOLED screen (GNex)
OMAP 4460 (GNex) + SGX543MP2 (4S)
1GB RAM
32GB internal storage
Oleophobic 5 point capacitive multitouch

8MP back-side illuminated sensor (4S)
1.3MP front camera (GNex)

802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth, NFC
GPS, accelerometer, barometer, 3-axis gyroscope, digital compass, proximity sensor
Dual microphone (noise cancelling)

Multicolored notification LED
MicroSDXC Slot
MHL USB2.0 port
3.5mm audio jack (Nexus S Wolfson DACs)
Internal speaker (GSII)

User replaceable 2200 mAh battery
Plastic shell (for durability)
Gorilla Glass (or equivalent)

Approximate dimensions: 135mm (H) x 67mm (W) x 10mm (D)
Similarly sized to the GNex except slightly thicker without a curve to accommodate the battery and MicroSDXC. With the larger battery, the weight gives this hypothetical smartphone a more "solid" feel.

This will all be, of course, running Android 4.0 ICS

With the exception of the SGX543MP2 (which may be Apple exclusive because of contracts), this phone is 100% feasible. It irritates me that nothing has such a complete package and everyone always leaves out something (and not always because of skimping either).

I've a feeling Galaxy S3 will be close to this. GNex is good compromise right now. Extended battery and StickMount and you're close.

The GNex isn't too bad but it suffers from some decisions that Samsung made.

For instance, it's a large device that's super thin but also with a curved screen. This is a waste of space that could have fitted a larger battery and a MicroSDXC slot as well as alleviate the "cheap feeling" people get with a too light device (the GNex is very durable).

To me the battery life and the lack of MicroSD are the biggest failings of the GNex.

They sell Samsung brand extended battery and cover. GNex sold in Korea all came with free extra 2000mah extended battery and cover. You can buy it here if you want.

You can carry any sized thumb drive you want and stickmount it. Not an elegant solution but at least you can carry all the movies you want on USB sticks.

Maybe Google didn't want it on their Nexus or Samsung was saving it for their upcoming SGS3.

Augmented reality directly onto glasses or contact lens with voice activation and motion capture for your hands. Though ideally, would read brainwaves and react accordingly. 😛

Hmm, i don't like my phones too big so

120mm x 61mm x 11.5mm maximum, and actually as far as the thickness goes i'm not too fussed about anything to thin, its uncomfortable in the hand if it is too thin.

The screen then should be going almost edge to edge to maximize space. and screen quality along the lines of iphone like resolution.

i want that with basically the innards of..

wait, basically i want the nexus, just not so damn big, make it a wee bit smaller, it doesn't need to be thinner, in fact i don't mind if its thicker, put a better camera in it and i'm happy.

Agreed. Hence why I prefer a 4" screen. The Nexus is too big for my tastes.

I prefer 4" screen too. I think that's the sweet spot for phone. However, I understand the technical limitation of AMOLED right now and know it's currently impossible for Samsung or any company to build 720p OLED on 4" screen. Given a choice between 4" 800x480 and 4.6" 1280x720, I'll choose the latter every single time. 4.6" size wasnt a design preference by Google or Samsung but rather engineering necessity.

I played with VZ Galaxy Nexus display at Costco today and didn't find the phone too big. My thumb could reach all area of the phone without any problem. Now I can't wait for my GSM version to arrive next week.

4" or 4.3"

I don't ahve tiny hands, but not huge or anything either. I wear medium sized gloves, and when I pick up a 4.3" phone like the Razr or SGS2, I notice I have to stretch my thumb and force it to hit the opposite corner if I need to reach that far. It's come to the point where I have to put effort to cover the screen. It's not that I can't reach, but going back to a 4" screen feels very easy. Sorry if most of America has huge hands, but this is why the phones around the world have been smaller overall and they haven't been releasing 4.5, 4.6" phones everywhere. Sure I like the big screen, but the phones are also getting a bit big to hold.

As to those saying that "theres not much of a size difference" when they compared 3.5" to 3.7", and then 3.7" to 4.0", and 4.0" to 4.3" and then 4.3" to 4.65" every little bit counts. Every little step might not seem much, but you soon approach the limits of what average sized hands can hold comfortably.

As for the mockups of phones showing virtually zero bezel, that's just unrealistic. As your thumb reaches across the screen, some of your palm will start hitting the phone. Maybe if you have XL hands that's fine because your thumb can span a 6" screen no problem, but if you start tripping the multitouch, your phone will start not functioning as well.

Anyway, I'd take a SGS2 pretty much or if they could give me one with a 720p (non pentile) screen that would be great. The front camera is 1080 capable right? As long as I can HD video chat with people, that's good enough. I'd add a notification light. On second thought maybe the AT&T design is better. However I don't like the bulgy back. I'd take a solid flat back even if it means a 9mm thickness all around. Keep it 10mm and under and I'm ok. Once you drop to like 7mm thickness, it starts getting ergonomically uncomfortable like the RaZr. The new iPod Touches are impossible to hold without a case because it feels like it will just slip out of your hand.

The reason I want more thickness is perhaps they can put a fatter battery in. Maybe 2000 mAh? I don't want anything too thick obviously, but 9-9.5mm all the way around is sufficient. Obviously the extended battery packs are a waste of space and not space efficient and they build on the external housing meaning in order to give you an extra 1000 mAh they end up adding like 75% more thickness to the phone.

This.

I chose the 4.65" in my "ideal phone" because that's the minimum size for the screen. Maybe next generation a 4.3" 720p screen will be possible but right now it isn't.

Dual core and 10mm thick to get more battery life on the nice screen. No LTE for the same reason.

4.3-4.5" SAMOLED+ non-pentile 720x1280 display
Samsung hardware/design
HTC's keyboard (G2/4GSlide)
HTC's camera module from the Amaze/4GSlide
DEDICATED CAMERA SHUTTER KEY
Stock-ish Android 4.0 with the best from each manufacturer customizations except Blur, cause f Blur. (HTC Sense3 lock screen, Touchwiz contacts/social networking integration little things)

100 GB of data for $50. I'd take it even if it's not LTE. Most smart phones are good enough for me now. The part that annoys me the most is that to really use most of the killer features of these phones requires being on WiFi.

With 100 GB of data I can watch something on Netflix or anything else that's data intensive without worrying about going over. Also, I don't count current unlimited plans since it's pretty much limited to almost unusably low bandwidth after a few GB.

Galaxy Nexus type performance, with a better radio, better camera, better battery life, running iOS, and a MBA touchscreen type dock that dual booted the phone into OSX and supports the Thunderbolt IO.
