Why is Freespace 2, a game that is about 4-5 years old, still selling for $90+ on Amazon and eBay? What's so special about it?

Because you can't find it anywhere else and it's probably the best space fighter game ever made.

Same thing with that ps2 game... rez?

It's true, I've never actually seen Freespace 2. I have the first one, but I could never find the 2nd one. It's like ultra-rare.

Well, if you were on Direct Connect with me you could find it :)
And I did buy it. Back when it was still popular.

Great game. It fact one could make the argument that it s the last of the great space jet sims. Wing Commander died. Freelancer and X2 were nice but not quite the same. You dont have squadrons and thats what really makes space jet sims special, tactics and cool graphics.

Although X-wing Alliance was pretty good.

lol, you almost scared me. I have the original Freespace all scratched up in a pile of junk CD's, but I thought it might've been Freespace 2.

Apparently according to the Freespace 2 license you can freely distribute the product as you please.

I think Freespace 1 and Freespace 2 are both free to download now.

Im glad I have my FS1 and 2 still with me.

Freeport is an excellent setup that allows you to play FS1 in the FS2 engine.

Its probably that expensive because it was taken off most people's shelves several years ago. As time goes on, CD's get scratched, lost, broken and less copies are available. The people that havent played FS2, THE BEST space based combat sim to date, hear about it, want to play it and find its rare :)

Mind you, it still looks better than a chunk of games released these days and Id be tempted to buy it at $90 for a console. $90 must be around £50 which is kinda high but ok.

Yep they both are free to download. They opened up their source code ...and hence why there are quite a few mods being developed for it.

I have both sitting on my hardrive atm - no $90 for anyone else...

Now at some point in the next 4-5 years I need to find some time to play them :)

Where may I find them available for download? Do you have any URLs on mods in development?

Bit torrent for downloading.

As for links I lost them recently when I reformatting and forgot to back up.

But the main one is where you update Freespace 2 graphics etc for an updated look. Other mods include recreating Babylon 5 or Homeworld.

Links to try:
Main Freespace Mod Database
Fileplane Stuff
Freespace 1 Game to Freespace 2 Engine Port

Now as for the main one of updating the graphics I'll need to have another look. Hope that helps.

So do you just legally download the game itself from torrent? or does it come with the movies and everything?

Yep it's all legal - everything that I've checked said so before I did. I haven't fired what I downloaded up but I should expect it comes with everything. It was a reasonable enough download for a game of its time.

Oh hells yes! I forgot about the underdogs!
They have a ton of good stuff, including a version of Magic that actually works in WinXP.
Great Site.

Ooh I have originals of FS1 and FS2 + the expansion. And I agree, best space fighter game ever, even after this many years.

If you're interested in updating the graphics, I think there might be a high res texture pack that someone made. Try googling for it...

I don't think the underdogs version comes with voice audio or the video cutscenes. I ended up having to hunt the torrents for it; ~2 GB. The graphics still look good, 6 years later.
