Don't want to start another DeSantis thread, so I'll just drop this shit here.
DeSantis claims that there was no abolition movement until the War of Independence because the DOI had said "all men are created equal." That and becoming a democracy is, according to him, what got us first thinking about ending slavery. In the video I linked, Van Jones points out that the slaves themselves had always questioned it, which is correct, but incomplete. Also the Quakers opposed it from the moment they arrived here. And there was a small abolition movement outside the Quakers going back to at least 1750.
And of course, the practice ended in Europe long before it ended here. It had to have been questioned in Europe or they wouldn't have ended it. Which is odd, given DeSantis statement, since these were still monarchies when they ended the practice. We became a democracy in 1776, and took another 89 years to end it. Because racism was deeply ingrained in white culture here, more than in Europe. That explains why a democracy takes 89 years to end slavery, while totalitarian monachies across the Atlantic ended it centuries before.
This is what happens when partisan assholes who know nothing about history decide to comment on history.
