Des Moines, IA - What is there to do there?

Well the VAR company I currently work for (Network Center, and Microsoft Business Solutions, formerly Great Plains Software) is now sending me to aid in the development of the new datacenter in IA. I am very excited in this project as I do believe cloud computing and datacenter virtualization are vital keys to success of every IT infrastructure, small to large. This datacenter will really accomplish the true concept of what is cloud computing.

However, I will be there for roughly 30 days (and this isn't for a few months actually, I don't actually think the datacenter exists quite yet, construction I presume) however, I am from Fargo, ND, and lived in Minneapolis for some time, but never ventured off to IA. How is the city? Night life? Cost of living? Just wondering if any of you fellow ATOT "peeps" are residents there and could give me some insight?

Thanks again guys, have a great day!

I went there for a wedding, flying in all i saw was crop fields, driving to hotel/wedding/anywhere drove through crop fields.

I mean get away from IT..ALL..
All of it.. every little bit of it.

Go to Des Moines Iowa, it ain't got there yet and it ain't headin' thata' way"

If you are from Fargo, it's basically like that...only a lot bigger. There's not a ton to do in Des Moines really. Iowa State is about 20 minutes up the road in Ames, so there's plenty there for college stuff - bars, big 12 football games, basketball, ect. All pretty good times.

But for more stuff to do, you are looking at heading over to Omaha. Lots of stuff going on there at any given time. Maybe not as much right now as other times of the year, but there's always some kind of concert or major event going on.

Well once again, I don't think this datacenter has even been constructed yet. The VAR I work for just basically "pimped" me out to MBS for the project when it does occur. So NOTHING is final yet.

Yep, already datacenters and even medium sized businesses with the "smaller" infrastructures are realizing the potential with virtualization. Especially with the SAN storage capabilities the ability to scale storage out is amazing. EMC, and Netapp have made it so easy to distribute storage its great.

We will no longer see servers as individual practices or limit them to individual horsepower, but every single host within the entire datacenter as "contributors" to the giant engine that chugs eevery guest os/virtual machine for the entire company. Complete fail over. Complete scalability.

Pretty cool stuff.

Well, I reckon you might could whitewash that there fence on yonder. There's always corn to be picked, shucked, spackled and wrapped. Sometimes, we run under the crop duster, cause when you take in a big suck of that dust what kills bugs off our corn, hoowhee, them's good times. But most folks agree the best thing to do in Des Moines is to run like hell or grow old and die; either way, you're outta Des Moines.
