Derivation of "put the kaibash on"?

Has anybody heard the expression "to put the kaibash on", meaning, to kill something? Somebody just used this in an IRC room today and I'd never ever heard of it before. Is this spelled right? Anyone know where this came from?

I believe it is/was a Jewish saying....means to stop something......kabash is the correct spelling I believe.
