I just can't watch pro sports anymore knowing that these guys make so much money playing games.

i agree, it's sick how much these guys make, okay, maybe it is wortth a pretty penny for hard-work and talent at a sport, but the salaries for these guys are totally riduculous now,... the worst thing is that these guys will actually not play as hard as they can if they are "unhappy" with their contract... WTF? what happened to playing for the love of the game...

Maybe the xfl is on to something. The players get only about $5000 per game but if they win they get more. They really have to work for their money. All the other pro players are just bloated rich folks.

The fact that a major pro sports franchise will pay that kind of money does not bother me; if an employer is willing to offer an astronomical salary only shows that the player in question is "worth" that kind of money (supply and demand anyone?)

What ruined most major pro sports for me is the lack of a revenue sharing agreement (and reasonable salary cap) like the NFL has. In every major North American league (but the NFL), teams now must fork over obscene amounts of money to attract the top talent and put together a winning team. Unfortunately, because of the lack of revenue sharing, small market teams are finding it impossible to compete. Take Pittsburgh for example: the Pirates have been in serious financial trouble for years, and only remained in Pittsburgh because the city agreed to construct a new stadium. The Pens were bankrupt until Mario bailed the team out; and though they are surviving now, the Penguins can not pull in the revenues that major-market teams are able to. It removes the level playing field that makes professional sports so exiting; instead of the best organization putting together the best team, the championships go to the teams that are able to raise the most money.

Where's the sportsmanship in that?

it's a job, apparently someone thinks the players are worth all this money. If you have a problem with someone getting payed alot of money doing something they're good at, you're an ass.

I'm sure if your boss came up to you and offered you a million dollar raise, you wouldn't turn it down. Such hypocrisy!!!

Don't blame the players for these outrageous contracts. Blame the people that are forking out all this money...

I agree with Reitz, nothing wrong with supply and demand.

However, given the situation in baseball with the discrepancy between the 'havs and have nots', I've pretty much lost all interest in the sport. Lets face it. We can all probably name three or four of the teams that will make the playoffs in baseball this year - and the season hasn't even started.

Of course, ticked prices have skyrocketed as a result of these salaries.... and I for one am not gonna pay that kind of money to watch the games. It's just like with the NFL -- I'll watch on TV so long as it's free. I don't care about the exorbitant salaries so long as I'm not paying for them. If they make it pay per view, I stop watching, just like I've stopped going to the ballpark. Simple as that.

Now if only the vast majority of fans were this way, we wouldn't have the exorbitant prices and salaries......

Did you know that Jeter's contract is only the second-highest. I didn't see any complaint when A-rod got his $252 million contract, I sense some jealousy towards the Yanks. Are you by any chance an A's, Red Sox, Mariners, Rangers, or Braves fan?

I don't understand why people say they havn't watched a game in so long just because of the money the players make. Who cares?! The game is still played just as hard and with just as much passion by the players, with a few exceptions. Just get over it and enjoy a great game for god's sakes.

Edit:

<< Did you hear what Jeter said though? "I don't play for the money - I play to win" <-- Yea right >>

Yeah I bet he went up to the GM and said "Give me this much money or I won't play." Wrong, they offer him the money because they want him on their team. You'd take it too.

FrogDog,

<< I don't understand why people say they havn't watched a game in so long just because of the money the players make. Who cares?! The game is still played just as hard and with just as much passion by the players, with a few exceptions. >>

That is definitely not true. Think about it, how many of these players have a guaranteed contract? Maybe a handfull. How many work a second job in the off-season just to make a living? None. Rather than just playing a game as players did in the past, professional sports is now a livlihood for the athletes.

That's not to say that individual players don't love what they do, but gone are the days of Ironman football, and playing to win at all costs. Players are not injured as frequently as in the past, but almost no one plays through them. Why risk tens of millions of dollars just to win a silly title?

Do people that complain about the money atheletes make still watch movies, knowing that the big stars in those movies get paid $20 million a film?

i suppose everyone would stop getting all pissed if all the players were paid 50k a year and the owners pocketed that extra 300 million in payroll that they have now?

baseball player - 252 million contract

movie star - 20 million/film

doctor - 100k per year

engineer - 50-80k per year

teacher - 20-30k per year

This doesn't make sense to me. Entertainers are WAY overpaid. The people that make a VITAL contribution to our society are paid very poorly...

I wish the government would take it before the owners decide to blow it on player salaries. Imagine if they took just 30% of his salary and put it back into the community, and I don't mean via income taxes, I mean off the top.

Bryan,

People with ideas like that scare me.

Who cares how much they make. Are you just mad that you can't play well enough to get that kind of salary?

<< i suppose everyone would stop getting all pissed if all the players were paid 50k a year and the owners pocketed that extra 300 million in payroll that they have now? >>

No. They would complain about the owners then. They will always complain about someone making more until it is them. Hypocrisy is the greatest luxury. Raise the double standard.

Yeah, and I bet you all hate Bill Gates, Bill Cosby, and Oprah Winfrey who all have more money than you can shake a stick at.

Quit acting like whining brats and worry about your own finances instead of someone elses.

Yeah, I guess I am jealous. I wanna be one of those guys out there that can hardly read, but get hundreds of millions of dollars each year to chew tobacco, spit, and scratch their asses and crotches on national television, and swing a stick/throw a ball. You call that athletic? Bullsh!t. Then there are those hard working family men and women who can't even feed their children. Why? Partly because their taxes go to pay for the stadiums that are built to house these "athletes". They get the money from the people, why can't they spare a little giving it back to the ones who need it most?

Bryan, they do give back to the community through various community service projects, coat drives during the winter, donating to charity, etc.
