Depressed/Burnt Out (work) as hell, short trip to Vegas = WIN? ***UPDATED with answer

edit: BTW I've never been.

Got back from my trip yesterday, returned to work today. Definitely do not feel "recharged" (I wasn't expecting to), but it was a great distraction and there was plenty to do. I really enjoyed myself. It was nice to get away for a bit and enjoy some of the things Vegas had to offer.

I enjoyed lounging at the hotel as much as anything else. We stayed at the Vdara. If you are looking for an "oasis" from the strip and not just a place to party and gamble, stay here. We roamed the strip when we weren't poolside at the hotel, which was crowded, but respectably quiet.

I played hold 'em ($1/$3 and $1/$2 no limit) at TI and Bally's and walked away with more than I sat down with, which was better than I'd expected. I had set my expectations realistically and played within my budget, so I was happy.

I was lucky enough to get some good cards at the right time on a few occasions and was smart enough (or so I thought) to not get too far into a pot I couldn't win. At least most of the time LOL.

All in all, I walked away with more than I came with and sat next to someone from my hometown during one of the games which was cool. He had lived in my area (within a couple of blocks) and I, his. He told me about some good local (casino) games I hadn't been to, since I haven't been to a poker room in my hometown for years.

We ate at Ellis Island the first night for the $13.99 Prime Rib which was good as most steaks at much pricier restaurants. Plenty of food and free beer with the meal. Also ate at a "gourmet" burger joint in the Paris hotel, had lunch at the Venetian and had $75 of food credit at our hotel, which was a better value than expected and freakin' delicious.

Did a lot of sight seeing, which meant tons of walking. I'm still trying to determine if that's a good or bad thing It was painful, but I think it helped get me off my ass and realize I can do these things (that I usually avoid b/c of pain) and may encourage me to get out of the house more.
All in all, I had a good time. I had fun gambling. I didn't walk away a millionaire but won a respectable amount of money ($250ish) and as expected, spent a fair amount of time just relaxing.

I'd go back but definitely not in a hurry to. I was on a slightly limited budget but still managed to eat well and play the tables, not to mention stay at a 5-star hotel on the strip. Not too bad.

One last thing. My dumb ass left my cane at the airport. I immediately called Lost and Found and Baggage claim from the hotel and they had no sign of it (it hadn't been turned in). The day before we left, I got a call from the Lost and Found at the airport - they had found my cane. This is awesome because the cane was a gift from a friend for my 40th b-day. So my trip to Vegas truly was lucky in that respect. I'm grateful somebody was kind enough to turn it in.

It's really f-ing hot there right now (granted it's dry heat)... but we have a heat wave in a lot of places. I remember going in Sept of '08 as the stock market tanked and it was almost unbearable.

I'm not a huge fan of Vegas but if you're going with friends I'd say go for it.

Take a Friday off and you could do it over a weekend.

Go with a bunch of friends and make sure you bring lots and lots of drugs and alcohol to the pool party. If you're not gonna do that, there's no point in going to vegas.

meh If you want to give your money away while getting a thrill, go make a donation to a local charity.

A short trip will not cure burn-out. Trust me, I know from experience and wish I could figure out a cure.

+1

@ OP

You need a holiday before you burn out.

As things apparently are, perhaps you should consider having a day off or two a week for a while and see whether the reduced workload combined with a good way to spend that spend time to help you unwind?

The "a good way to spend that spare time" is more important than the time off. Simply lazing around at home for example won't help recharge your batteries, it will just make you feel lethargic and "damn, is the holiday time over already?".

Just got back from Vegas! It was over 115 everyday I was there but I had a blast. I was able to take my wife who had never been. Be prepared to do a lot of walking though.

Vegas doesn't strike me as the ideal place to mellow out. But that's just me. I like to chill when I'm on vacation. A couple of days is better than nothing but you should try and take at least a week. Switch off too. Leave the phone/tablet/laptop at home and make it clear to everyone that you will not be available at all.

Wait, you took your wife to Las Vegas? You must be the only guy in the universe that would do such a thing.

Heck that's somewhat of disrespect to your wife!!!

seconded, especially in Vegas. You are going to want to hang out at the pool all day drinking, go to shows at night, and gamble until breakfast the next day. good sleep doesn't happen there.

If you go, please gamble a lot and don't spend much money on hotel rooms, food, or shopping. The state need the gaming tax revenue much more than the county/city need the other tax revenues.

Ehh, Was in Vegas once, wasn't really my cup of tea. I'd much rather go to Mexico, never been, but I'm thinking Tijuana would be fun.

I wouldn't go anywhere in northern Mexico right now. That's where all the problems are. The Mayan Riviera and Cozumel are very nice. I would have suggested Acapouco at one point. Was nice when I went years ago but it too has gotten dangerous. Cancun is supposedly overrated.

I was in Vegas for three days a week ago. Loved it but I definitely didn't relax. Walked a ton, drank a ton, gambled a ton. I never relax when I'm there. I'm sure you could relax as many of the hotels there are nice and most have nice bars and pools to relax at.

We stayed 3-nights in Vegas over the 4th. If you go, find a hotel with a great 21 & over pool. We quite like the Flamingo's setup - on the strip, no resort, fee and massive 21+ pool.

Los Cabos/San Jose Del Cabo area is great -

Hot & dry with a breeze off the water. Zero humidity, no bugs & no violence.

I'll let you know how Cancun is in a few months as we have a week booked there the end of Oct.

And I agree, no chance I'm heading to any border city.

I'm pretty set on going for about 4 days (3 nights) with a friend who is on the same page as I. Low key, lots of pool time planned and lots of people watching, sight seeing....may take in a show like Absinthe. That is relaxing to me.

And of course I'll likely lose a bit of money at the blackjack/hold 'em tables. I enjoy table games occasionally and it's been a long time since I've been to a casino locally.

RE: Burnout...I've been there 10+ yrs and have adapted well with the many changes in the past decade. It's just that we have a lot more added responsibilities thrust upon us the past month or so, with more coming. This has been a trend for the past two years or so. We're growing, which is good, but with growth comes responsibility. I feel like I'm going to crack at times but I know I'll get through it.

Thx again for the responses.

If you buy drugs, the drug dealers won't shoot you, since that goes against good business sense.
