Deplating a K6-2

MDE

Lifer
I have an old AMD K6-2 400 and a motherboard that I'm trying to throw together for my mom. Is it worth it to take the plate off the top or should I just leave it there? I'd like to use passive cooling if possible as this thing is going to be in her kitchen, so would i notice much of a temp difference deplated? I'm probably going to use a stock XP 2000+ cooler as that's the only thing I can find around here.

Its best you leave the plate on....

A k6-2 400 is going to run rather hot... A large heatsink should be fine though as long as you have at least one case fan.

I have both a K6-2 500mhz and a quite rare K6-3 450mhz here and I've removed the plate from both of them for two reasons:

1: I wanted to overclock them, so needed the heatspreader as close to the CPU as possible.

2: I think the plate is a bad design, since if you look at them, you'll see the chip details are etched into the plate, rather than written on it. This means of course, that these etchings are going to have to be filled with thermal compound in order to have flush contact with a heat spreader.

I think passive cooling is out, since kitchens tend to be quite warm places, plus AMD chips run pretty hot anyway.

Michael.

thanks for the link... i'll give it a try, what do i have to lose other than an ancient CPU?

Haha, this looks pretty neat. I have a k6-2+ 450 that I might try this on 🙂 I have a cyrix MII I can practice on first though 😛
