Hi all,

I will provide as much info as I can but I am not on site.

I recently installed 2 PC's in a MAC based music house. here is the issue:

I am certain it does not have to deal with the PC hardware as all networking performs as expected when devices are connected to a gigabit switch, but the moment I introduce the line that stems from the network, internet access is present, but computer to computer networking ceases.

Without the network line connected we can see any MAC's or Windows machines connected to the switch but as I mentioned earlier, the moment the building's network is introduced, kablam.

The MAC's can see the PC's, but the PC's cant see the MAC's .

They have a low end "sonicwall" installed and I have no idea what modem their service provider has furnished. I have been reading that it might be that there is a device not compatible with LLTD in the chain, but I am not a network guy. I build high end DAWS for musician & composers.

I have never experienced this before in the 100's of installs I have done.

According to an IT guy that came in to have a peek, he feels it could be the sonicwall causing the issues but I am at loss and am close to losing a client although the networking component is not my field of expertise and MY hardware performs as expected.

If anyone has some insight or a method to troubleshoot this please lend a hand

Thank you, Bruce Berman

If the computers are able to communicate while only connected to a switch and without the router/internet devices attached, that means that something else on the network is acting as a DHCP server and is creating conflicts when the sonicwall device is hooked up. You (or they) need to find out what that other DHCP server is and configure it to stop being a DHCP server.

There is a Synology NAS in the network that IS seen by the machines in question. The odd thing is the MACS see the PC's but the PC's dont see the MACS. The network there is a mess and none of the employees on site have a thorough knowledge of it's configuration and the person responsible for the network has been described to me as colorful expletive. What do you think could be handing out DHCP info? In other words, where should I start looking?

Thank you so much!!!

What OS on the PC's? I had some issues getting Win7 and Win8 to talk to Mac's.

I was a bit confused seeing MACS all capped because I assumed MAC Addresses.

While it's possible that one of the computers could be acting as a DHCP server (particularly if they have Internet Connection Sharing enabled), it's more likely to be something else. The Synology NAS can be configured to act as a DHCP server so it would be a good idea to check the settings on the NAS to make sure its DHCP server is not enabled. It could also be a wireless router set up to be an access point on the network but not configured properly (make sure the DHCP server is disabled).

Thank you again, I will investigate and see how things shake out.
