Denzel Washington : Am I missing something?

Lifer
I watched Antwone Fisher because someone suggested it to me.
The movie wasn't bad, but Denzel made me want to tear my eyes out.

I have no clue as to how he made the jump from hometown Saturday night theater to real, live, getting paid for it acting.
He is the male equivalent to Drew Barrymore.
Was he in E.T. and I didn't notice?
Are they both still riding the wave from that POS?

I really just do not get it.

are you serious? denzel is great. how could you compare him to drew barrymore. ugh.
Let me see...
He's totally unbelievable, just like Drew.
He delivers his character awfully, consistantly (just like Drew).
He comes off like he has a board up his ass and just learned the lines 5 minutes ago (Drew wins on this one, she isn't uptight at all.)
Shall I go on?

Denzel also lacks bewbs.
I guess I may have been a little harsh on Drew.
Shall I go on?

He's awesome. You on the other hand, are a douche.

Awesome as in "Denzel can create a vacuum sufficient to suck a 747 through a chain link fence" or awesome as in you want to bear his children?

Yes and Yes.
Suck and more suck.

He's the same Denzel in every movie. I sometimes wonder why they bother even changing his clothes. It's immediately obvious he's going to deliver all his lines in that droning sleep-inducing monotone.

I agree he's not very diverse in his methods but that's what makes him Denzel... the way he does deliver ... that's unique. If you think it sucks, you haven't seen a lot of B movies.

I am not a huge fan of Denzel --- all his caracters are the same in every movie. He does them well but to me it looks like it's the same caracter in every movie.

Denzel is about the same as Jack Nicholson. Good actors but really one dimensional. I would say the majority of actors are that way; they can play different characters doing different things or as good guy, bad guy or anywhere in between, but essentially they are playing the same character with slightly different attitudes. Pacino is the same way and so it DeNiro pretty much. Very few actors are capable of playing different characters well. Johnny Depp is one I can think of off-hand that can actually act different characters.

It's funny you mentioned Jack. He's one of my all time favorites and now that you mentioned it, he really is one dimensional (as are DeNiro and and Pacino).
Hell is, those guys have a personality wrapped up in that persona.

Keanu and John Cusack also come to mind.
One dimensional as hell.
I like both of those guys because the "nice guy" personality comes through.

Denzel is like a robot. Zero personality on toast.

They have a name for those people who can play different types of characters. They are called character actors. Johnny Depp being one of the few living that can carry his own movie as a character actor. Peter Sellers would be another one. Most character actors have to be secondary characters because they cannot carry the whole film.
