Denver Nuggets Coach Suspended for Racial Slur
DENVER (Reuters) - The National Basketball Association Denver Nuggets on Wednesday suspended coach Dan Issel for four games without pay for using an ethnic slur on a fan who heckled him after the team lost a game in the final seconds.
On Tuesday night just after the Nuggets lost to the Charlotte Hornets 99-96 Issel was harassed by a fan in the sparse crowd and yelled back: ``Hey, go drink another beer you (expletive) Mexican piece of (expletive).''
Issel, who has spent his entire professional career either playing for or coaching the Nuggets, broke down in tears as he apologized to the fan he insulted, the fans in general, the team and the city of Denver for what he called ``unchristian like conduct.''
But his apology was not enough for leaders of Denver's Hispanic community who threatened a boycott of the games unless Issel takes what they consider serious steps to show he is sorry.
``This man will have to live with this for the rest of his life. We should have a zero tolerance. The Hispanic community is deeply hurt,'' Colorado state Sen. Rob Hernandez told Reuters. ``He (Issel) has to meet with the Hispanic community.''
It's been a bad season for the Nuggets team whose record is 7-14. Star point guard Nick Van Exel also recently asked to be traded because he was tired of the team losing.
Issel, whose jersey hangs in the Pepsi Center where the Nuggets now play, stepped down in 1995, citing the pressure of trying to win as one reason for leaving.
