hey nuggets/broncos/buffalos

im moving up there really really really soon, and i need some advice on where to live.

if you could give a quick rundown of all the "neighborhoods", and recommend one thats appropriate for me, it would help me much

im young, single. currently paying 900$ rent in houston to be able to live next to work.

-id really love to be close to work Here (google maps) but id have no problem moving <15 miles away if work area is boring/expensive/crime ridden AND i can bike to work or car commute is not bad (i refuse to drive in houston - its TERRIBLE)

-if you know specific places to live, thats even better. i dislike huge apartment "complexes". prefer duplex style units or rows of townhouses, etc... not apartment jungle

-ps, i have a light weight rear wheel drive sports car. is tht a problem? will i need a beater or winter car?

thnx!

The area you need to search is called "Capital Hill". Most of the stuff is old converted mansions, apartment buildings (not complexes) and bungalows.

I've lived here and here

Get snow tires and your car should drive fine. I never had any problems with theft or vandalism...but beware the a lot of people don't know how to parallel park and might give your car a love tap. Still...it's a downtown neighborhood so you still have to keep your wits about you.

I'll PM you my old landlord's number. Her rates were usually quite good and many would include both utilities and cable TV.

lol okay well I don't live in Denver.

But as far as your sports car? What kind is it?

I don't know how well it will do in bad snow and Denver can get some bad snow. They are usually pretty good about keeping the roads decent enough to drive on though. At least the main ones.

I have a Maxima and it does great but it's FWD. You may have to throw some sandbags or something in the back of your car if it's really light.

Crime isn't too bad, but it of course varies by the area. If you stay really close to downtown I don't think it's much different than other big cities. Further south or out can get worse. A lot of people commute from places like Thornton. Bit longer drive than you are wanting though.

its a honda s2000 - short wheelbase AND convertible. methinks i might need a hatchback beater. i personally am not too worried about physical crime (dont have family) - i just dont want car vandalized--that type of stuff.

the Cap Hill suggestion is what my co-worked up there echoed. ill really need to find some good leads and pursue them in person though..

Trust me, Thornton into Downtown is typically a 40 minute drive...I do it every day.

The bad/sketchy areas are North of Colfax near MLK Blvd (Chris Rock anyone?), east of Colorado blvd, parts of Aurora (nicknamed Saudi Aurora), Commerce City, and basically the large rectangular area west of I-25, East of Sheridan, North of Mississippi and South of 72nd.

Of course, none of these areas (even Five Points) are like inner city Detroit by any means.

If you can find a place that offers a garage for your car, then I wouldn't worry too much. A lot of apartments and such offer them for a bit additional rent, though not sure so much about the ones in the city itself.

About cars around here...for next winter anyway. Though we still may get a snowstorm or two.

Use at least 50/50 antifreeze and don't top off with water - top off with the 50/50 stuff.

Get Prestone De-Icer for your washer fluid.

Other than that there isn't much you really should worry about. Other than go through a wash once and awhile when possible. You may look into an undercarriage coating for your S2000. I've seen them use MagChloride as well as sand/salt mix on the roads in the winter, which can cause rust of course.

Have you ever driven in snow?

You'll do alright. Just don't drive like an ass. I know that is how a lot of other people here drive in the snow and bad weather. If you plan on it taking longer than normal you'll be fine. You just gotta slow down and start more gradually and not ride the ass of the car in front of you. No sudden/sharp turns. If you start to skid when braking, don't break more - just let off the brake and sometimes a bit more gas will straighten you out. You kinda get a feel for steering a skid after a few :p

It's not nearly as bad as a lot of people make it. But pretty much with any bad weather you gotta watch out for the idiots on the road.
