Sad day in America:
I have one question what is a pitbull? Anything that "looks" like one? There are literally 30 breeds and infinite number of Pitbullesque mutts.http://www.pets911.com/information/pitbulls/denver_bjcolumn.php
Pit Bulls are no stranger to bad publicity, but their situation in Denver has reached ridiculous levels of hysteria.
The Colorado Attorney General's office decided last week not to appeal a district court judge's ruling that upheld the city's right to ban Pit Bulls, and as of May 9, the law now prohibits "any person from owning, possessing, keeping, exercising control over, maintaining, harboring, or selling a Pit Bull in the City and County of Denver."
My god, they make Pit Bulls sound like Plutonium. All of this because a horrible Pit Bull story appears in the news? The original law stems from an incident where a 54-year-old local minister was attacked and mauled by a Pit Bull. Are we going to start banning everything we see in the news lately? If so, let's start with Paula Abdul.
This is a scenario being played out across Denver right now:
There's a knock on your door and a uniformed officer waits for you to hand over your family pet. Not a pet that has done anything, but it is guilty nonetheless. A dog you've raised for maybe 10 years. Perhaps one the kids around the neighborhood like to come over and play with. You've had him since he was a pup. What do you do? Hide him in the attic like Anne Frank? No, you hand him over because the law says so. You hope he finds a new family in a new town, but you fear he will be euthanized which is a definite possibility considering a Pit Bull's reputation.
Ahh, their reputation. Stone cold killers they would have you believe. Probably the same people that had us spend money preparing for the Y2K computer crash or fearing an invasion of Killer Bees. If I had a little girl, would I let her run up to a Pit Bull and pet him? Of course not. But I also wouldn't let her run up to a big German Shepherd, a Doberman, a Rottweiler, or an empty well. All of which are legal.
I haven't seen this much overreaction since Janet Jackson had a "malfunction" at the Super Bowl. It's beyond knee-jerk. Bad dogs are not born, they are made. And unfortunately, the type of people that seem to be adopting Pit Bulls are making a lot of bad ones, using them for fighting or as tough-guy status symbols.
But if you take a Pit Bull from birth and raise it in a loving and affectionate home, is it going to grow up to maul someone?
No.
The ban is an emotional response to a publicized situation. It's a good thing we haven't banned men wearing goatees following the Scott and Laci Peterson tragedy.
This country is based on individuality and not assuming a person of a particular race or religion will act a certain way. I also saw on the news a disproportionate amount of crime in Denver is perpetrated by teenagers. Should we round them up in Denver as well?
Here is a list of things that might be in your neighborhood right now.
A registered sex offender
Firearms
A meth lab
Paula Abdul
But rest easy. The dogs are gone.
