Dentist wants me to buy a night guard

I went to the dentist this morning and found out that I have a cracked tooth. This was caused by grinding my teeth when I sleep.

On top of the crown that I'll have to get now, my dentist wants me to get a night guard - "fantastic" I thought... until I saw that it was $487.00.

What is the difference between the ones dentists form to your mouth and sell and the ones at Sports Authority for boxers with the exception that it's not fitted to your mouth?

Anyone ever had to deal with this before? I'd rather go the cheap path on this one I think.
 
You dont need a night guard . My DDS did the same thing . I opted not to get and that was 4 yrs ago.Get a cheap sports mouth guard if you think you need one .

Don't wear a cheap mouth guard. My son used to his teeth and his dentist said that using a cheap mouth guard will make him grind more, so while his teeth would be spared, his TMJ (the joint in the jaw) would get worn to the point that he would have MUCH worse problems than a cracked tooth. He said that the only safe ones are the ones made by the dentist. And no, he didn't say that to try to sell us one, he actually said that my son didn't need one at that point and we should just wait to see if he grew out of the grinding.

Don't you just have to boil those sports mouth guards in water and so that you can fit it in your teeth? I say go for it, what will it hurt.
 
The ones from the Dentist are sometimes setup so you can't move your jaw at all. It doesn't just sit between the teeth as a cushion. I had one when I got my braces off. It tastes like sh!t so I coudln't wear it much but it actually fit right onto both jaws and held everything completely immobile.
 
I use the sport mouthguard from the store that is fitted by boiling first.

My dentist actually recommended that first over the fitted night guards because of price.

Ive used these sport mouthguards for over 10 years now.

The one you purchase from the dentist will be hard plastic and custom molded to fit around your teeth. If your night guard does not fit properly, you can end up doing more damage to your teeth. Those sports mouth guards are not designed to fit as snugly as a custom molded night guard.
 
My duaghter had the same problem (caused migraines for her) and paid the big bucks for the NG. She swears by it. She did say that she had found something cheaper though, but already had the NG.
 
Ok, seems like lots of people are going both directions and good reasons for both..mainly the following:

Sports Guard:

-Price
-Might not taste as bad as the other
- Can boil to fit your own teeth

Dentist's Guard:

-TMJ issues prevention

Do the dentist nightguards do anything to stop the habit of grinding? They would be well worth it. After 10 years of using sport mouthguards, I still grind, not my teeth but the mouthguard.

Yes, I believe that is what they're designed to do. When you teeth clench the night guard you cannot grind them.

How does that stop the grinding? Wouldnt you just be grinding the nightguard instead?
 
I have a custom molded one from the dentist that I've been using for the past 3 years. Get one, you won't regret it.

I tried one of the ones that you mold yourself and they are sh!t. The ones from the dentist are a perfect fit and don't come loose at all while you sleep, while cheap ones don't stay in properly, are bulky, and are just plain annoying to wear.

The only downside is that if you forget to put it in you will still grind your teeth. They don't really fix the problem. You're pretty much going to be wearing it for the rest of your life so get the good one.
