Dentist teeth whitening?

Anyone had this done at the dentist? Whats it cost? How much better is it that one of the kits you can buy at the store?

Also, i had a root canal when i was about 13, the tooth is darkening. I heard you can re-drill it and bleach it from the inside, anyone know anything about that.

I've googled, but I'm looking for some more first hand experience.

Did it a couple years ago, the type where they take a mold of your teeth and you use stuff at home, plus some visits where they use extra powerful stuff at the office.
My teeth weren't too bad, not a smoker or anything, but they did get noticeably whiter. As a plus, I still have the custom trays and can use prescription strength whitener, though I haven't in a quite a while.
Downsides: my teeth got pretty sensitive after treatments, mainly why I don't use the home stuff anymore. But no lasting ill effects.

Do you remember how much it cost? I'm fairly certain no insurance would cover it...

With my co-pay they sure did. What they aren't covering is a crown in front where one is needed for cosmetic reasons. I had root canals in two front teeth and they're turning dark, yet because they're intact, they won't pay to cover them up. :|

If insurance doesn't cover it, they typically seem to run around $300. I think a lot goes to making the trays, at least they last forever, and are much more comfortable than the generic store stuff. If you want whiter teeth, it's pretty much the only way to go, although there is laser, no idea if it works well.

Costs 250~350. As always you get what you pay for, whiter teeth vs OTC products.

Let us know when you start feeling the "zingers"

if you want it done right go to a dentist.

if you only want the portion of your front teeth (what you see in a smile) white then crest white strips does a pretty good job. i haven't smoked or drank coffee, they worked good for me. its looked good but i always resented the fact that the back teeth were still yellow. as well as on top and the back side of the teeth.

when i finish college i'll definitely do it at a dentist.

$150, I got molds made, and little syringes of bleach. Used it for a week, worked wonders. Not that my teeth were bad, I'm just vain.

Same here.

I used those Crest White Strips in the past, but they hurt my teeth so I stopped using them.

Two weeks prior to bleaching your teeth you should use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth like Sensodyne. During the bleaching process you should continue using this toothpaste and then two weeks after keep on using it. I can pretty much guarantee you won't have the sensitivity issues you experienced before.
