I had my first visit in a LONG time last month. Its called a new patient visit. They inspect all your teeth and get xrays and do a gum/jaw line ratio thing. (sometimes they clean your teeth, but they didnt with mind.) said my mouth was too sensitive after all the prodding and we had to reschedule for a cleaning where they are going to do scaling (scrape the gums back and clean under them because its been so long since ive had a real cleaning.. thats 2 visits alone)
I dont have dental insurance either. My first visit was about $180 without the cleaning. I expect my next one to be even higher since they have to use drugs.
Oh and if you tell them you are really really afraid of the dentist they are MUCH nicer to you IMO

So they tend not to be mean when they tell you how much you have wrong in your mouth.
