dental insurance

I went today to get my wisdom teeth xrayed and found out that my health insurance doesn't cover dental stuff at all. (provided through my college) I did a search on google for dental insurance, and came up with a couple shady looking sites that seem to have dental insurance plans that pay partially for the bill. Does anyone have any experience with these things?

My employer provides dental insurance which is totally separate from medical. My dental insurance is through Met Life.

Some employers - such as mine - only pay for routine, preventative things like annual checkups and cleanings, nothing more.

I belonged to one of those "dental discount plans" for awhile and it was totally useless. Also, any real insurance you could get would have a long waiting period before they started to cover anything major like oral surgery.

If the teeth are crowding your other teeth, then the sooner you get them out the less damage they'll do. Spending $1K now is painfull but better than messing up your mouth for the rest of your life.

It's one of the all-time best Simpsons episodes -- Burns is giving the plant workers a keg of beer in exchange for giving up the company dental plan, while standing in line to vote for the change Homer's brain is talking to him to try to get him to do something.
