Blah--just that liberal media on a baseless witch hunt again.

Republicans are the most moral people on the planet--Pat Robertson told me so! :D

The latest and greatest from this round. From DR so take it with a grain of salt, but I imagine it is real.

Hastert Legal Letter To ABCNEWS President Westin

Hastert Legal Letter To ABCNEWS President Westin

David Westin
George Stephanopoulos
Brain Ross
ABC News
7 West 66th St.
New York, NY 10023

RE: False Story Regarding Justice Department Investigation

Dear Mr. Westin, Stephanopoulos, and Mr. Ross:

At 7:25 p.m., the Statement of the Department of Justice confirmed:

?Speaker Hastert is not under investigation by the Justice Department.?

At 10:21 p.m., you wrote:

?Whether they like it or not, members of Congress, including Hastert, are under investigation,? on federal official said tonight.?

This statement is false, and your republication of it after actual knowledge of its falsity constitutes libel and defamation. ABC News? continued publication of this false information, after having actual knowledge of its falsity, evidences a specific and malicious intent to injure and damage Speaker Hastert?s reputation by continued repetition of a known falsehood.

We will take any and all actions necessary to rectify the harm ABC has caused and to hold those at ABC responsible for their conduct.

Please advise regarding who will accept service of process to remedy this international falsehood.

Very truly yours,
J. Randolph Evans
Stefan C. Passantino
Counsel to Speaker J. Dennis Hastert

"Speaker Hastert is not under investigation by the Justice Department," DOJ Director of Public Affairs Tasia Scolinos said in a one-line statement.

Thought so too, until the Department of Justice issued a denial of this claim last night.

Well, given this Administration's track record, I would take what the Justice Department says with a grain of salt. I'm not for or against it, but let's just see what develops...

I seriously doubt the DOJ would release a statement like that if there was anything to it. Yes, let?s see where this goes though.

This could even be a strongarm tactic by the Executive Branch to intimidate Congress.

But then again, who would even think that the Bush Administration would do anything illegal or unethical?

Or the high level "source" in the DOJ may be a Bush lackey, passing out false information to make the "liberal" media look bad to help rally the minions.

It isnt hard considering the media's willingness to jump on anything without checking the facts.

Heh.

Hastert and DeLay remind me of Lay and Skilling- they're in charge, at the apex of a vast criminal enterprise, but they had no idea what was going on, no idea whatsoever...

But, then, Scrushy got off- convinced a jury that he had no idea his 5 former convicted and testifying CFO's were looting the company. The gene pool in the jury pool is pretty thin in some parts of the country...

I sure don't think of Hastert as anything but a running dog--who is supposed to be numero uno in the house---but lets the corruption congressmen run the show.

I somewhat doubt Hastert is the corruption problem---but he sure has a talent for looking the other way.

If you and the rest of the morons would actually bother to read something besides a headline you'd know he wasn't under investigation for anything. That's why they haven't raided his office. Duh.

Morons?

A forum for more serious discussions of politics and current events. Passions are always high on all sides of these subjects so keep your posts on topic. PERSONAL FLAMES WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.

BTW, since when do bush and his lackey hack gonzales need any reason to raid anything? Offices, phone records, sovereign nations -- you name it.

The point some people can't seem to wrap their small minds around it this, there is more corruption on the republican side of the aisle, more investigations, more bribery (ever heard of Jack Abramoff?) but since the republicans are in control they don't raid their own. They "let the system take its course".

They only raid the opposition members' offices to get the headlines off of their own rampany corruption.

Now, who is the moron?

Hastert is claiming that the DoJ intentionally leaked this false information to ABC in order to intimidate him. Wow, those are some serious charges. I wonder if he could build a case against the DoJ?

It is the Bush justice department that took down Abramoff . What were they trying to divert attention from then? Despite your phlegm and flatulence filled diatribe about nothing the fact remains that Hastert isn't under investigation, they weren't trying to divert attention from anything, theywere seizing records they asked for last year.

You are still the moron, old woman.

And now, you're dismissed.

bush did everything in his power, along with the rest of his corrupt party, to shield Abramoff from any investigation. Only when it became clear that their efforts were completely futile did the investigation continue. It was an offshoot of the investigation of that corrupt felon tom delay which the republicans did all they could to stop too.

Do you think peoplel have NO memory? How the hell can you even attempt this nonsense.

Your memory like your facts you just make up as you go along. So the Abramoof investigation was an of offshoot of Delay's huh? I'll be sure to tell John McCain since it was his investigation into Indian tribe fraud that launched the DoJ investigation in Abramoff.

Schooling you is getting boring old woman.

See you in a month!

Its part of my understanding that a good part of what really took Aberemoff down was some scorned girlfriend of one of Abremoff's associates who really got things going.
Seems like when thing were lovey dovey said associate was bragging in the pillow talk---when he dumped girl, she blabbed.

And it was a newspaper that took Cunningham down--then the DOJ had to act.

All I see the DOJ doing now is making sure no details will come out before election/06.

Sadly I have little faith in the justice department--or its little dog too---Alberto its constitutional Gonzales.

We the peopele really have to light some fires under some DOJ butts.

Actually, I have, and what I find is this:

Hastert Fights Back Against ABC News Report

ABC News Stands by Its Report

As for the facts of ABC News' story itself, this is what we've confirmed today:

That the FBI interrogation of convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff included specific and repeated questions about his relationship with Hastert along with other members of Congress.

That, although Hastert is not a formal target, the FBI has been looking into a letter Hastert and others sent to the Secretary of the Interior urging her to block an Indian casino that would have competed with casinos represented by Abramoff.

That a few days before the letter was sent, Abramoff hosted a fundraiser for Hastert at a restaurant he owned.

That's why I said above let's see what develops, because right now the fight is over what is meant by 'investigate'. ABC is not backing down from this at all yet, so it will be interesting to see if Hastert still pushes his libel suit.
