Denmark Strait

My sister has an extra credit assignment from her geography teacher to find out why the Denmark Strait is named so even though it separates Greenland and Iceland. I've been trying to help her by googling for about 10 minutes now and I've not found anything at all and was hoping that someone here was a geography buff and knows why or that someone might have better luck with google than I'm having. Thanks.

 

Maybe Denmark used to own one or both Greenland and Iceland?

That's possible. Be worth looking into the histories of Greenland and Iceland, I suppose, to see.

It's called the Greeland Strait in Icelandic. I don't really know the real answer though.
