Dems solution to Debt Ceiling. More spending

McConnell and Republicans want to continue current spending at $986.7 billion and leave untouched the new round of cuts on Jan. 15 that would reduce the amount to $967 billion. Democrats want to figure out a way to undo the reductions, plus a long-term extension of the debt limit increase and a short-term spending bill to reopen the government

Lets see here.

1) Democrats want to spend even more money then is already scheduled to be spent. and are willing to keep the government shut down to do this.
2) Democrats want to use the government shut down to change the existing law.

What happened to a clean CR bill?

What happened to the rants that Obamacare is the law and cannot be changed? and its wrong to use the shut down to change laws?
But now according to the Dems its ok to roll back the sequester, but its not ok to change Obamacare?

If the MSM wasnt liberal, the dems would be tanking right now from the hypocrisy that's coming out of there leadership.

Cutting is hard, spending is easy. It really can't be put much simpler than that. Leadership to the Dem's means taking the easy way out. It doesn't take a genius to realize that we're in a tail spin that we won't be pulling out of. It's just too damned hard to correct one hundred years of mistakes built upon other mistakes.

I say give it to them. Give them everything they want and then step back and watch it all come crashing down. Sooner is better than later. No better time than now.

So the GOP really doesn't want to compromise?
It's difficult to do so when the Dem's keep moving the goalposts.

Supposedly, we take in plenty of money to pay our obligations, so talk of a default is false.

I notice that my taxes are still due and being collected. The shutdown hasn't stopped tax collection.

There cannot and should not be any default, according to many folks.

Supposedly. These claims have been pointed out as not founded in reality. Many of the actions required to avoid default if we hit the debt ceiling are illegal.

Yes, the democrats should accept a clean CR and debt ceiling hike, which this is. The time for monkeying around with this stuff is long past over. (There was never a time for it) They are currently counting on the fact that everyone now hates the republicans so much that they can defeat them even more thoroughly. I would say that the democrats should pocket their winnings, enjoy the humiliation of the republicans, and call it a day.

My guess is that all the people who said that what the republicans were doing was perfectly okay will be OUTRAGED here though.

How is a clean CR, authorizing increasing spending?

The Republicans did not want to increase spending; all they asked in the last offer was to DELAY ACA - not kill it, not spend more, not spend less.

And specifically, only to delay the implementation of the individual mandate, in order to bring it in line with the special (read: special interest-based) exemptions for corporations which already delayed it for them by a year.

This would delay the penalty for the uninsured who choose not to be insured for another year.

Did the MSM report it like that? I have a feeling they're still pinning the tail to the Elephant even if it belongs to the Donkey.

You would expect public outcry to make the deal and to punish Democrats for not going along with it - if this had been widely reported.

Thats not the Republican way. Their way is to break it and then blame it on the Democrats. They learned their lesson from Clinton. When Democrats run things, prosperity follows. Republican philosophy can't bring prosperity so the most they can do is attempt to prevent the Democrats from bringing it. They are doing their damndest to crash the economy right now. Unfortunately for them, America can see it. Unfortunately for America, the Republicans don't appear to give a shit.

Remember that the Stock Market bubble popped on Clinton's watch.
That screwed up a lot of prosperity for people retired.

The economy crashed between Bush and Obama. Obama chose to increase the pain by not taking the medicine when it should have.
Keeping the government under control is one benefit to a growing economy; not spending more than is coming in on worthless items for political cronies.
such applies to which ever party is in charge.

MSM would not report that the Dems did anything but ask for a clean CR. Clean being dirty water that is cleaned by Democratic filters.

If they are thinking like I am, then it may make sense to spend more. See if people are willing to lend you trillions of dollars at 2.6% interest, even when you can't possibly pay your bills, even when you have to borrow to pay your bills, it makes sense just to go all out and spend some more until the tap finally closes. Hopefully you can use those borrowings to buy useful things like Swiss Francs and gold.

Think of it this way. You have $100,000 in loans and you know you must declare bankruptcy because you can't possibly pay it off. For some reason you get a credit card in the mail. Most people will likely max out the credit card and enjoy the spending spree before declaring bankruptcy. I personally think its dishonest, but I have seen this behaviour in personal acquaintances.

"Why those dirty stink'in low down dirt eat'in Democrats, how dare they take us Repubs hostage when we're supposed to have already taken THEM hostage."

BTW, more (stimulus) spending got us an improving economy, absolutely NO bitching from the big money interests other than them persistently clamoring for more and more and ever more profits no matter who it hurts, maims and/or kills, a health care plan that enables millions more folks to get some basic health care who otherwise wouldn't be able to, a military that's still the most respected and feared in the world, and on a personal level, a likely bump in my military retirement pay and a raise in my private sector salary due to the improved yet fragile outlook in the market.

This is a picture of the real world that I'm living in, and not the "oh shit gawd almighty we're doomed 'cuz a black man is runn'in things" world the Tea Party wants us to believe.

edit - This and holding the nation's well-being for ransom is absolutely not the way for a political entity to justify its existence.

They cannot default on the debt. If tax receipts were only $500 billion then that $500 billion will go towards interest on the debt first and foremost. Period. They have no choice but to pay that first. The other spending (defense, entitlements, etc) is just political promises not backed by law.

Tit for tat. The House Republicans decided to use this tactic to force their agenda, if you think that was ok then you have nothing to complain about if the Democrats do the same.

Do you think what the House Republicans did was acceptable ?

And, btw, its not exactly the same situation now. The government is shut down. The House Republicans own that.

Its the same thing as workers going on strike for higher wages, and ending up settling for the same wages and less benefits just to get their jobs back.

Its stupid to play chicken if your driving a Ford Pinto and your opponent's got an Abrams.
