I think it was wrong for Grand Moff Tarkin to destroy Alderaan with the Death Star. The people on Alderaan had nothing to do with the rebel alliance and did not deserve to die. It's not like they would have been any kind of threat to the Galactic Empire. The excuse that Tarkin just needed to "demonstrate the power of this battle station" is ridiculous, he could have just as easily demonstrated it on an uninhabited planet.
 
The true demonstration of power was that he didn't fear the backlash that destroying a world like Alderaan would cause. He thought the Death Star would elevate the empire beyond all reproach or questioning, because no one would risk the consequences of speaking out. Destroying an uninhabited target wouldn't demonstrate any more power than everyone knew the empire already had.
 
He was trying to force Leia to give up the location of the Rebel base. He thought that destroying her, supposed, home planet would convince her.

Well okay, it was the location of a former rebel base, but all the same Tarkin didn't know she was lying.

Yeah, but he was pushing here to try and see if she'd give up the fact that she was lying. In an interrogation you NEVER take the first answer as the truth.

Fine, but I still don't agree that getting a small piece of information justifies the deaths of billions.

Actually the destruction of Alderaan was key for the Empire. It wasn't that Alderaan was a direct threat to them but what Alderaan represented was. They were a peaceful world that embodied everything the Empire was trying to change in the universe. They were a symbol of peace and balance throughout their existence.
