Demon's Souls, My Impressions...

I trying to get back into writing on a regular basis (it's been months!) and would totally appreciate it if any of you read my DS review over at my blog and posed some contructive critisism, or even just read it for the fun of it. 🙂

I did posted this in the big Demon's Souls thread but I think it got lost. Anywho, here is the link and a little excerpt from it:

"So why would someone want to play this game? The only explanation I can give you is my own—Demon’s Souls managed to invoked emotions in my that I've not felt in a very long time in regards to gameplay. It’s deliberately slow progression made me appreciate simple acts but ostensibly on a monumental level."

I like the game very much. Has an old school difficulty to it which could turn lots of people off but I dig it. Looks and sounds nice and you can play it any way you wish. The last boss I finished off was the Adjudicator (4-1) and he was a bit cheap with some of his attacks going through walls (lol) but I had plenty of healing stuff. The game seems to be doing well for itself and hopefully a sequel is in the cards.

You are correct in your review about the game not being cheap (except for that Adjudicator 😛 ). If you die its because of the way you play. Running around in a level is the worst thing you can do. You have to be extra careful when near cliffs too.

I'd like to get this game but the possibility of playing for a good while, dying, and so making 0 progress is a turn off.

THere are so many games where I feel that I wander about for a good while, die, and I just wasted 1 or 2 hrs.

Great review. I've almost broken my 360 controller playing Burnout: Paradise on occasion. That the AI has to take over control of your car to drive it into the nearest obstacle when you get hit enrages me to no end. No dev should ever take away your control, especially when you barely get tapped by another car.

What? You can stash away souls?!

[q]You do have the opportunity to stashed away souls with a friendly NPC located in the game’s hub (The Nexus), so if you utilize your resources properly then you won’t completely lose everything.[/q]

You can't, that's incorrect and I've changed it. I was thinking of the soul gems that one gets from beating bosses.

You can always point out that you can store all your shards/chunk shards with Thomas since you don't need them in your inventory whenever you upgrade weapons and they can take up lots of space if you aren't paying attention.

You know, I held on to all my shards until the end of the game because I wasnt completely sure if they were going to be used for something else (IE:forge items). Plus, I was doing well enough without them. When I finally got a chance to cash them in I learned the process was a real pain. Everytime you redeem one, it takes you out of the menu system. I have 20-30 of each of the lesser types and 10-15 of the more expensive ones. 🙁

Demon Souls is nuts. I still haven't beaten the first level... Something always distracts me and I end up dying. I think I have ADD.

I still love this game so much but the awesome mp action of MW2 and Forza 3 with my dad and brothers has caused me to not play it. I think I've only beaten 7 bosses. Maybe I'll give it some time this weekend....doubtful though at least until I unlock everything in MW2.

You can equip the souls to an item slot and just spam the square button.

I just got this game two weeks ago, and I must say it is AWESOME. I think it is my favorite game on the PS3 that I've played. I can't stop playing it. I've completed 1-1,2, and 3, all of worlds 2, 3, and 4, and 5-1. I just have a little bit more to go till NG+

Pretty good game but the PVP is really lame. I was fighting against a black phantom and got back stabbed even though i wasn't even near him when i was running from him.

can't beat it by myself, i need assistance. especially at boss.

The Old Hero?

That boss is blind, so sound is really important.

You can use Demon's Prank as a big distraction. If you can't cast spells though, you can simply wear the thief's ring and walk (not run) and the boss should not be able to detect you. He will wander around striking random pillars.

Ok I bought the game anyway and I have to say it is definitely one of the better games I've ever played (see avatar).

Super hard but super rewarding 🙂

I just beat 1-1 and 2-1 in NG+.

The difficulty ramped up for sure. It is weird feeling going from unstoppable to vunerable again.

Nice review man. I'm around SL 80 and i'm about finished with my first run through. Probably a bit over powered but I wanted to forge some of the uber weapons and be able to actually use them. Plus, I did a lot of farming to upgrade a few of my weapons to +5's. Haven't found anything that beats my +5 crushing claymore yet. Super fun weapon to use 2 handed.

GOTY for me.
