It was a Democrat who waited til the last minute to release the Bush DUI arrest. This just proves that Al Gore is so desparate to win that he'll do anything. I'm sure the democrats are all sitting around laughing assuring themselves that they've won the election.

And you think that if the Republican's had any dirt on Gore, they wouldn't hesitate to "leak" it to the press.

Yeh, sure.

Well, the "package" leak didn't work. They have to try something.

i wouldn't be surprised if this causes a backlash, actually. i still think Bush will win. Perot's endorsement may help.

Speaking as a conservative/libertarian type, and no huge fan of the Democrats, i don't think that this is a smear. Heck, i have to give the Dems the benefit of the doubt that they would come up with something better than this if it were a true 'smear.' If it is one, it's a pretty lame one.

This isn't a smear, this is one thing, clear and simple... a pretty blantant so-called expose reporting, the purpose of which is nothing more than to grab some ratings. "Presidental candidate drunk driving exposed, tonight at 8."

The Source: George Stepanopolis on Nightline tonight (thursday).

Neither of these guys is great for either side.

Gore: Complusive liar, smoked pot hundreds of times, possible inferiority complex, the cliff claven caniadate

Bush: Drinker, rumors of cocaine, not consider smart (but as smart as gore easily)

Here's a little GOP spin:

From Drudge: "BUSH DUI STORY FED TO MAINE REPORTERS BY DELEGATE TO 2000 DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION, LAWYER IN ORIGINAL CASE, FOX NEWS IS REPORTING... DEVELOPING///"

The whole story from ABCNews.com

"Appearing tonight on Nightline, Erin Fehlau, the local TV reporter who broke the story, said she was confident it was ?not a setup? ? though the revelation apparently originated with a lawyer who has served as a Democratic National Convention delegate.
A police officer, Fehlau said, had overheard a judge and the attorney discussing the matter. The officer asked Fehlau, who was covering an unrelated story at the courthouse, if it was true. Later, Fehlau said she sought out the lawyer, who provided her with a court document on the Bush case."

Maybe an Special Counsel needs to be appointed to see if the atty and cop were in collusion!

Now, contrast that to Dick Cheney, who "was twice arrested in his early twenties for drunken driving, a fact that Cheney privately revealed when he was nominated to be secretary of defense." Washington Post cite. There are many more articles from other papers in July and Sept. of this year mentioning his 2 incidents.

He knew he had something that would be more of a problem if he hid it than if he got it out at the beginning.

I don't think it takes a genius to be President. It takes leadership and wisdom and the ability to get along with others. Al Gore has proven that he thinks he's right and you'd better just do what he wants. This kind of infantile attitude that Gore has is the exact opposite of leadership. I think Bush is a guy who will try to get a good deal and will talk to Democrats as well as Republicans and will get things done that have to be done. Most democrats will get along alot better in congress than republicans will ever get along with Al "what's my position this week" Gore.

I don't see how any intelligent person can back up either major party in good conscience. They suck equally in my eyes. The problem is, what to do about it?????

edit: at least the candidates equally suck, and I don't think a 3rd party can win. :(

<< It was a Democrat who waited til the last minute to release the Bush DUI arrest. This just proves that Al Gore is so desparate to win that he'll do anything >>

Nobody in the Gore camp had anything to do with this news release.

The DUI release is just presenting some of the facts about GW Bush's past. It is on the record, something that he went in front of the judge, and pleaded guilty. I find it sad that he avoided this issue and didn't release it before. He and his compaign staff just hides it in he closet, until he got caught.

It is not a smear, it is something that he DID. It is the truth. The truth is not a smear.

So much for a person who is always 'claiming' to be honest and truthfull, while pointing fingers at everyone else.

So why is it always a smear when someone points out the fact that Bore is a pathological liar?

I think it will cause a backlash. Alot of people seem disgusted by this type of politics, and this might bite Gore right on the ass.

I've conceded that Bush was semi-inept before. After looking at things, I've changed my mind.

1) He flew fighter jets
2) He's improved Texas and brought the Demos and Repubs together, which would explain his high approval rating.

That certianly doesn't sound like the work of someone who's semi-inept.

Anyway this whole DUI thing is pathetic. Any one of Gore's scandals alone is far worse than this. I also don't understand how you can dismiss Clinton's treason and crimes against humanity, but then jump on Bush for a DUI from 20yrs ago.

Republicans suck too.

Bush should have let this be known before now. What else is he hiding? And no this incident is not relevant to my feelings about Bush. It was said earlier the truth is not a smear, but hiding it is.

A, I hate to bring up the obvious, because I will probably still vote for GWB but, if there was no violation from '76, on the books or not, there would be no "last minute smear campaign" would there be? It's no "big deal" but he should have figured it would surface at some point! On a side note, anyone who believes that Al Gore and the Democrats had nothing to do with this surfacing is truely naive! The thing is though.....it's looking more and more like it may backfire on them!

What's even better is that he lied to a reporter that he had no other arrests than one in college after he'd been arrested for drinking too. It's sad to see a candidate pander to American priggishness, smear an opponent as a liar, and turn around and expose yourself as one.

Actually Moonbeam, it has now been shown that "Officially" he didn't lie......A condition of the court (i'm sure between the lawyers only) was a little thing called an SIOS (suspended imposition of sentence) which basicly said that after the period of time specified this arrest would be cleared from his "Official Record"........therefore as long as the conditions were met, GWB had no legal obligation to disclose this because once again, this arrest is now "Officially" sealed and exponged from his record! Seems to me the smart thing would have been to bring it up anyway but........this being said, he never really lied because the records are sealed and it is no longer an acual arrest.

He got deferred prosecution (that is what it is called in Indiana)?

Wow... that geeky democrat lawyer must have really worked his ass off to get this info.

Did anyone see this on ABC news tonight (Friday)? Man that guy looked... I can't describe it. He looked like a geek. He had one of those caps with the long bill.. and it was creased in the middle... forming a "V"

I... unbelievable. When they said they had a source, I thought at first it was Larry Flynt, but this dude was a total shock...
