Lawmakers Seek to Continue Iraq Reconstruction Watchdog

House and Senate Democrats introduced bills yesterday that would extend the life of a federal oversight office that has issued a series of sharply critical reports on the Bush administration?s reconstruction efforts in Iraq.

The Office of the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction would be abolished next year under a Republican-backed provision included in a military authorization bill that President Bush signed last month. Some lawmakers have said the provision was hastily added without their knowledge.

The new bills were among the first indications that Democrats were following through on their pledge to increase oversight of the Iraq war.

Remember how only a month ago the Congress voted to fire the Reconstruction watchdog?
The Republicans claimed they didn't realize that they did that.
Now the Dems are fixing things.
Kudos Democrats.
Oh yeah, if it turns out American companies cheated the government than I say it is tanatamount to treason and Americans should boycott those companies.

They should lose their U.S. Corporate Charter.

Let them leave the Country and get the India Corporate Charter that they really are anyway.

well, with billions of $$ already unaccounted for, i'd say it's just a matter of turning the dogs loose on the crooks with the full might of the congress behind it. and, the investigation should also include those members of congress and the white house that have been obstructing the investigation up to this point. logically speaking, why would anyone in gov't who truly represents us, (the taxpayers who are getting ripped off) want to obstruct an investigation like that? especially when it includes the likes of halliburton, etc?

one would think that those individuals who tirelessly complain about cutting taxes, wanting to eliminate the death tax, wanting smaller government through eliminating gov't services to the poor and needy and regulatory agencies, reducing benefits to our veterans, etc. would be at the forefront of this issue screaming for heads to roll for the wholesale theft of their precious tax $$ and for subverting our mission in iraq and afghanistan through stifling our ability to properly complete our rebuilding efforts there.

funny that i haven't heard from any of them so far.

Business has gone international. We specialize in war machines, war materials, and related services. We are in competition with other countries. It is in our best interests that there are lots of wars. If you want to stop one you need to start one or two new ones somewhere to keep our edge. Oversight is fine so long as it mean overlook and doesn't get in the way of profits.

To quote PJ, "That might be bad, but it is still better than voting Democrat." :)

But the point is, without the Dems taking power congress, those companies would still be allowed to fleece us with impunity.
The Republicans have been burning us for years (12) and people are finally beginning to wake up.

Umm, just a minor point, but if we're going to throw around the "treason" term we're gonna need a whole lot of rope and a whole lot of poles. We'll also have to hold new elections to replace the completely empty government buildings.

;)
