Dell's differences in pricing across US divisions

I am looking to buy a new Dell PowerEdge server for my office (it's a school). I configured a server exactly the same way in the Small Business section and the K-12 Education section.

In the Small Business section, I was quoted a price of $2007. In the K-12 Education section, I was quoted a price of $3199. This all seems a bit outrageous to me.

Isn't the K-12 Education section supposed to be cheaper than the Small Business section?

I'm confused.

taxes are probably handled differently, too. in my experience, SM and Education are basically even, just diff products are emphasized. But that is a HUGE difference, maybe a glitch?

That is about typical. Dell charges WAY more for their education computers. Dell claims a 3% education discount (a bit more if you buy multiple computers and ask for a greater discount). That may be true. But the small business computers get the 20%, 30%, 35% off discounts. Small business computers get the rebates. Small business computers get the option for 90 day warranty. Etc. Basically the 3% education discount is worthless.

I've purchased a dozen or so computers for a university and recommended dozens (hundreds) more computer configurations for the university. I still cringe everytime at the education prices.

better service? my laptop was purchased through home, and my roommate's was purchased through edu, and gets much better service than i do.

Dell SB also sends out coupons via e-mail, lowering the price even more.

If you have a corporate sales rep, you can get them even cheaper than Small Business or Home. I dunno if I can say exactly what we pay, but it is below the prices of the recent hot deals, at least on monitors.
