Dell's $299 PC (Dimension 2400)

RU482

OK. I'm going to get my mom a PC for her B-day in July. She's got a Compaq that we bought her in Dec 99, IIRC. something like a 475Mhz K6-2. anyway, it has run amazingly flawless over the years.

I think she lets it run all the time (it's always on when I visit anyway). Every Christmas I get bored and open it up, and it's always FULL of dust. Once a year it gets vacuumed out. Anyway, enought praise for the old Compaq.

How do a keep a base model Dell running as long as this old beast? Luck or prevention?

thoughts?

My gut tells me to replace the PSU right off the bat...but hell, a decent PSU costs 30% as much as the machine.

once again...

any thoughts??

I'm facing a similar situation. In addition to keeping the dust out I would get a good surge protector for it and keep the PC where it can get cool air. Heat, dust and narly voltages will shorten the life of just about anything.

minus the dust, this thing sits in the coolest part of the house. I have to credit the surge protector, but after 5 years, it could probably use a good replacing too.
thanks for the idea

Wow, I remember my K6-2 from a while ago. Those things were pretty good.

yeah...I was impressed the first time I opened it up and saw that there is NO HEATSINK at all on the CPU:Q:Q:Q

I do have to step back and say there was one failure. the hardrive failed about 1.5 yrs in. Upon replacement, I was shocked to see that Fujitsu (maybe it was Compaq, as an anti vibration measure) had installed a rubber boot around the hard drive :Q. And even more to my horror, there wasn't even a case fan...not even in the PSU. Talk about holding the heat in, no wonder the thing died....just out of warranty too. Interestingly enough, I replaced it with an IMB deathstar, which makes me think that God has a special place in his heart for this PC
