Spec'ing a system for our lab today. First thing I find is that they want $130 for a RAM upgrade from 128mb to 256mb of SDRAM. WTF? Not in this lifetime, buddy! Next, they claim that the TNT2 M64 video card is not compatible with Win2k, which is a load of crap! If it's compatible with NT4.0 (which it is) it's compatible with Win2k.

So, I move onto another system (P4). Where I find that for a RAM upgrade from 128mb to 256mb of PC600 RDRAM they want $110!! $20 LESS THAN SDRAM???!?! Now, thoroughly disgusted I next find that they claim that the Geforce2 MX and their USB Keyboards ARE NOT COMPATIBLE with Win98SE. Utter Bullsh!t!! I'm running a Geforce2 MX on my Win98 system AS WE SPEAK, and as for the keyboard, it's just a freakin' USB device!!! They say that all is well with these items if you use ME, though....

dell preloads comps with a lot of software... they basically gave you the "idiot answer" in hopes you wouldn't know better... it's possible that the drivers for those devices in combination with other aspects of the environment (O/S and other software) could lead to an unstable system... not that any Windows comp is superstable anyway, but that's just how they do things...

also, if you were speaking to a sales rep (my fiancee is one), the order-entry software they use only allows them to put in components in certain combinations (ie. if the system doesn't let her add a TNT2 in a Win2k machine, the only logical reason to give the customer is that it's not compatible)...

if you feel you can build/buy a better machine, do so... otherwise you have to put up with the way they do business...

that's normal,
every brand name computer manufacturer charges you a lot for adding more ram.

you can buy kingston valueram pc133 256M for $40 or pc100 for $20 from dell's software&accessories department and install it by yourself.

if you're buying P4 system, remember to change 128M pc600 to 128M pc800.

Take the money for the PC budget, build the PCs yourself, and go to kinko's and they can make neat little squares that say "Dell" on it for you to glue onto the little square indent that is on every PC case nowadays for processors logos and such.

its a bad idea to have a mission critical lab running with a bunch of homebuilt machines.

we all know that homebuilt is better, but when sh*t goes wrong, it is so much easier to have a "Dell Guy" to bitch at and get Dell's support.
