If I set the jumper on the mb to maintenance mode i can change the processor speed from 400 to 450mhz, will this overclock my processor??? i cannot change any other settings in the bios

no that changes multiplier but your chip is mult locked. only way to oc is FSB but you can't do that with your board.

No you cannot upgrade that computer with a PIII, you'll need a new motherboard at least. When was your Dell XPS R400 made? Any PII 400 from before 8/98 can be overclocked by covering the B21 pin. You simply cover the B21 pin with some electrical tape and pop it back into the motherboard, and your chip is now unlocked. In maintenance mode select 450 and you have a PII 450 now.

Of course like I said, this only works on PII 400's from before 8/98, so if yours is much older than that don't even try. I had an R400, and so did 2 of my friends. All 3 were from before 8/98, and all 3 were overclocked to 450 very easily.

i saw that people had upgraded their cpu on the dell message board by using an adapter for the slocket and then putting a new fan on... mine i got 8/18/98, damn!!!

That should work man, if you want more info on covering the B21 pin just let me know. It can be covered with a sliver of electrical tape, and you don't even have to take the case off the cpu to do it. Easiest overclock I ever did, and it was on a Dell of all things.
