Dell XPS M1730 SLI 8800GTX 1920x1200 1,925$

Hot?

Was browsing for a good gaming laptop for a freind in the military...this might just fit the bill. Ive seen the cheaper laptops with a single 88/9800 chip for 1250$ but they seem to lack a few things. Add the extra RAM, GPU, a nice CPU, and a good warranty plus a good resolution (assuming SLI cards run games at this resolution?) and I think this is a winnAr!

Say, hows the relative performance of these mobile parts? Im thinking these 8800GTX are closer to like an 8800gt (So 8800GT SLI)? Compared to modern cards that might mean about GTX280 performance? How about the CPU, spec wise it looks a little better than an E6600...I dont know what that would be nowadays (an E7xxx something?).

Yeah, pretty much a portable desktop...and you'd probably get an hour on battery if you were just surfing the net or whatnot.

Which is why I still think they need to have an option to toss the battery and put in a PSU so you don't have some stupid power brick to drag around. Most people who get something like this do so because they cant carry around a giant desktop, and at the same time whenever they can use this thing there is almost always a place to plug in. In the rare case they want to run on a battery they could pop off the PSU unit and put on a large (20 cell?) battery. Use a standard plug on the laptop and the battery itself, if your not running the laptop you could use the cord to plug in/charge the battery.

Does anyone know how you would go about verifying the specs once you got the unit? Is there a way to tell if you actually got a 500GB 7200RPM drive? I think windows itself can tell you your CPU and RAM...how about the video cards? Im always suspicious about laptops, Ive heard of cases where they try to cheat you by putting in lower end parts...and it doesn't seem easily identifiable without the right software (especially hard drives).

Yeah, it's pricey but I would say a hot deal for the few out there who are in the market.

SLI + T9300 + 6Gb Ram for under 2K? Doubt you will beat it, almost every laptop maxes out at 4Gb and the ones that go to 8gb are insanely expensive to actually put that much ram in it.

8GB DDR2 = 2x4GB DDR2

I don't understand what you are saying...

I know the Dell has 6Gb not 8Gb, but as I've never seen a notebook that maxes out or even support 6gb I was comparing it to the ones with 8Gb limitations.

You would be looking at almost $400 to go 8Gb for example...

I think I'd rather build a desktop i7 ($1500) then buy a netbook ($500), probably will be more practical than a 2k laptop.

17" w/ Quad core and the latest Geforce 280M mobile processor.

I'd also look into the Alienware M17. They have a quad core w/ Crossfire (ATI version of SLI) for around $2k.

Yes, it is a super nice notebook. That 280M wouldn't beat out SLI'd 8800GTX's though.

You can also get a barebones from rjtech.com for around $1400 if you have the other components. If so I would definitely choose the Sager

Actually the 280M will beat the SLI 8800 GTXs. Take a look at this chart.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/M...chmark-List.844.0.html

The 280M = 11,767 3DMark06
Geforce 8800M GTX SLI = 11,745 3DMark 06

The 280 is going to use less power and run cooler. It's a 55nm chip vs. (2) 65nm chips. Which results in longer battery life.

Those 3dmark scores are averages. The 280M score is from just one reported score, while the 8800M GTX SLI score is an average of 3 scores (one of which is 12847). Keep in mind the 280M is a G92, so it isn't that much more advanced than the 8800 (as opposed to the desktop GTX280, which is an entirely new generation of GPU).

At similar performance level a single GPU solution is ALWAYS better. Some games just don't scale that well, and definitely no game scales at 100% consistently. That alone would make the GTX280 a better option, but I bet it also uses less power, so there's another selling point.
I gotta say though, DELL has pretty good service, and that 3 year warranty can go a long way.

I just noticed, if you get the stock configuration ( Intel P8100 and 2Gb Ram ) its only $1349 with the SLI 8800M GTX- That's a pretty killer deal IMO!

That's with Dual 8700, not 8800. It's a $450 upgrade to 8800.

If I configure that Sager as the Dell is with the same processor, WUXGA screen and 6 gig of RAM it comes out to almost $2700 unless there is some coupon I don't know about.

I didn't configure the Sager the same as the Dell. There's no reason to overpay for a 500GB laptop HD or Ram. Today I went ahead and purchased the Sager w/ 1920 x 1200, 280M, Quad Core Q9000 CPU, 2GB of Ram and a 250GB 7200 HD. All told was a little over $1900. I can order another 2GB of ram for $25 from ZipZoomFly.

You can then order a 500 GB Hitachi 7200 Laptop drive for $70.

So you end up around the same price as the Dell w/ a quad CPU and a better video card, but with 2 GB of less RAM for the same price. Even less if you turn around and sell that 250GB 7200 drive that comes with the Sager.

Also note that the T9300 runs at 800mhz FSB and the Ram is DDR2, while the Quad core runs at 1066 and the memory is DDR3. So you're not only getting an extra two cores, but you're getting a bump in speed from the Ram/FSB.

No, I included that in the $1349. Base price was $999 yesterday and only $350 to upgrade to the 8800s, and $450 for the 9800GT's. Not worth the extra $100, as their pretty much the same.

That is one thing i HATE about Dell and their website. Different pages give you different prices. When I was looking, the upgrade price was $450 for the 8800's. They are so screwy.
