Am I reading correct in that the Dell XPS m140 has DDR2 but is not dual channel? If so then since the one I'm getting has 2 x 256mb sticks I could just replace one with a 1gb stick and upgrade the second later if I really needed it.?.

BTW Dell has some great deals on refurbs now.

Thanks
Carl

Where did you read this?

The XPS M140 uses the 915GM chipset I believe, since it features Pentium M processors, which does support dual channel.

However it really doesn't make much of a difference anyway. The FSB is already one of the limiting factors in the system's performance, increasing available memory bandwidth does not help much.

Just drop in a GB stick or two and enjoy :)

EDIT And link to refurbs?

I haven't read anywhere but I haven't been able to find it stated anywhere either. I've read a couple comments found on a google that said not but I'm not sure that I believe it. I'm looking to do some development on the laptop so the dual channel can't hurt with MS Visual Studio and MS SQL Server running.

Thanks for the link.

Link to Dell refurbs provided in previous post... thanks

The 9xx series of chipsets support Dual Channel, even in PentiumM computers. The PentiumM's just don't get a big boost out of it to make it worthwhile. In other words, don't buy 2 512MB sticks over a aingle 1GB stick for performance reasons.

Speaking of dual channel, my Inspiron 6000 has a 256MB and a 512MB stick of DDR2 in it. Both BIOS (on POST) and CPU-Z states that it is running in dual channel mode. Is that right? These are mismatched sizes (and brands).

It is in dual channel for the first 512MB and singlr for the last 256.
