Dell XPS 200 motherboard is fryed i think..

My dad's overpriced Dell XPS 200 wouldn't turn on the other day, so I opened it up and tried to give it a look, however, I'm really not a hardware guy (more of a software/technical support with the OS/spyware removal,etc. kinda guy), so I took it to the local PC repair shop. They opened it up, took one look, and said that the motherboard was dead. They said that the battery looking things (the top of them is supposed to be flat) had popped up, meaning that too much power came to the computer, and now the motherboard was fried.

this sounds pretty logical to me, but I wanted to see if this made sense to you guys (to make sure these guys weren't just spatting BullS**t to me).

I did notice that when i had the power supply plugged in, a green light that appears to be attached to the motherboard on the inside of the computer comes on. When i unplug it stays on for awhile, then blinks, then turns off. Not sure if it means anything or not, but it seemed to me if the motherboard was fried, why would that light come on?

So, yea, just wondering what you guys thought.

Also, if it indeed fried - replace or get a new computer?

I was figuring sense its the motherboard, one of the most expensive parts on a computer, and the facts its in an XPS, it could be pretty expensive. I'm still trying to find the price.

Battery things...do you mean the capacitors? If they have blown, then yes, the motherboard is dead. As far as replacing it, you can call Dell to see how much it costs to replace it (assuming it is out of warranty). Depending on how much Dell charges, it may make more sense to buy a new system altogether.

Ebay has your motherboard refurbished for $74.99 plus shipping. But computer geeks has a new geniune Intel 945gc board for $24.99 plus shipping. Look closely: your board is probably a btx form factor, which the geeks board is also. They also have a 955 board for $3 less, but it may be too big. If you get one, you may have to reload windows or use the repair option with your dell windows cd. If you don't have one, you can order one from a few software venders like 9software for around $16 shipped.

Some Dell XPS boards are notorius for bad caps (capacitors, battery looking things). Get a new comp. They're so darn cheap.

how can i find out what my motherboard is? I have heard intel 945, any way to confirm? I got the service configuration below, couldn't find it.

Also, would you guys recommend just replacing the motherboard with a refurbished one or buying a new computer? my dad doesnt seem to care either way (not too worried about the cost). my parents worry is that if they buy a refurbished motherboard and it goes bad while i'm at college, they will have to deal with switching computers while i'm gone. I dunno about that, but just their thoughts.

The chipset is the same as your system, and one search listed your case as btx, which means you need a btx motherboard like the geeks board. You should checkout the board by clicking "btx motherboards" on the geeks website. You can easily compare yours with theirs after removing your board from the case and checking the port positions. Your old board should have a removable backplate; the new board comes with one. The real issue is whether you are capable of changing the motherboard yourself. Read some faqs on this and toms hardware guide websites for tips on changing motherboards and decide if you want to try it.

yea i probably wouldn't be up for doing it myself. I was thinking of buying the part and taking it to the computer repair shop up the street.

If that's the case, it sounds like you'll end up spending too much on the repairs. Fixing broken PCs with hardware replacements is really only worth it if you can do it yourself (for cheap).

I'd suggest getting your folks set up with new Dell or HP PC that includes technical support. You can get them a Vista PC now, and they'll get a free upgrade to Windows 7 when it comes out in Oct.

Also, if they're thinking about getting a new PC, ask them if they might like a laptop. My dad raves about his cheap Acer 15" laptop almost every time I talk to him. If they're just surfing and stuff, pretty much any laptop will meet their needs plus they can surf from the couch. I never pegged my dad for a laptop kinda guy, but he loves it.
