Dell wireless drivers

I have an Inspiron 8600 running XP and the wireless card in it is on the fritz and I want to install a new card (Buffalo G54HP). The problem is the Dell drivers are conflicting and I cant get them uninstalled When I go to Add/Remove programs and I try to remove "Dell Wireless WLAN Card" I get an error "The removal of Dell Wireless WLAN card can not continue due to error code: Update.cpp 53"
How can I get these drivers removed to get my new card in?

Have you tried to disable the device in device manager and then uninstall the drivers?

or try some tricks in safe mode

I was going to suggest both of those things. Also, typically, wireless cards have one or more Services that run in the background. It might not allow you to uninstall the drivers or the card. Check for any services that look like "Dell" or "Wireless." Stop them, then try uninstalling the card, then the drivers. Shut down, take the card out. Done.

I came across this post searching for a workaround to the same intercept. Good advice on disabling in Device Mgr. Should have thought of that myself!

Once disabled, stay in the same window and uninstall the driver from there. Add/Remove Programs won't get the message (so to speak) until after a reboot.
