hi,
i have a new dell computer and it came with a good graphics card. it also has onboard video buit it has a small plastic cover covering it from being used.

i was wondering if i took out a graphics card and put it into a different computer, would it be possible to use the onboard video and will it void the warranty. i bought the 3 year warratny with it.

thank you

Anytime you alter, change or just do anything w/o checking with Dell, you can kiss your warranty goodby.

You can change your RAM and upgrade your hdd, but other than that, keep away.

Sorry, but that just isn't accurate at all. Dell will not warranty, nor will they provide support, on any hardware that didn't ship with the system, unless it was purchased from Dell at a later date (then it carries its own warranty). As long as the part you install is not responsible for other hardware failure then Dell will continue to provide warranty services and you will not void the warranty.

As I said, repeat " If you don't check with Dell before you make any changes, you stand losing your warranty"
After checking with Dell and getting their blessing for RAM and HDD replacement, unless you get it from them, their warranty will continue only on what they provided.
Otherwise, you must depend on warranty coverage from others. If you take out the video card or mess with the CPU while under warranty, goodbye......................,

That is not true. Dell will just not support anything the user added. Replacing a cpu, or a video card will NOT void the warranty.

The answer is yes, you can remove the video card and use the onboard video, and doing so will not void the warranty.

You will need to verify that with a statement from Dell.
If you don't check with Dell, no matter what is said here. No verification means with that and $1, will buy you a cup of coffee.

I don't know who told you this nonsense, but it's not true. I know, I have purchased well over 600 dell systems in the past 2 years, and have upgraded quite a few of them.

Who covered the warranty? Dell didn't. The manufacturer's warranty on the new add-on applied, right.

For a noob or anyone who is not certified, removing the videocard and using it elsewhere; if a problem occurs, then who's responsible?

I've worked on many laptops but for someone new, wouldn't you say its irresponsible for them to try. Justifying after the fact requires verification. One can do whatever, it's their kuleana.

pkme2, so by your logic memory and HDD's are ok to replace, but you claim that a simple video card replacement can/will void the warranty? I'm not sure where you are going with your other statements but I will refrain from further comment.

Answer: Please read my original post again.

FWIW I'm a former Dell (Optiplex and Dimension major accounts) Senior tech, and I am very familiar with Dell policies. ;)

Dell warranties only cover components and software provided by Dell. However, you can make changes to your Dell system, adding hardware or software, if you wish. If the user-added software or hardware CAUSES the problem, then that's not covered by the Dell Warranty.

Dell's Limited Warranty FAQ:

This limited warranty does not cover:

Software, including the operating system and software added to the Dell-branded hardware products through our factory-integration system, third-party software, or the reloading of software
Non-Dell branded and Solution Provider Direct products and accessories

Problems that result from:

External causes such as accident, abuse, misuse, or problems with electrical power
Servicing not authorized by us
Usage that is not in accordance with product instructions
Failure to follow the product instructions or failure to perform preventive maintenance
Problems caused by using accessories, parts, or components not supplied by us

Products with missing or altered service tags or serial numbers
Products for which we have not received payment

I've googled the Dell site before and know that limited warranty FAQ.

What you don't understand is that if you don't check with Dell first, you are taking the responsibility of interpretating warranty coverage without verification. Without verification doesn't mean anything to me.
Your interpretation doesn't mean squat unless verified by Dell. So we can go on and on, and this is only opinion. not fact. Do you want to give the wrong info. Check with Dell, first, that's what I'm saying.

While courteous as it may seem, it is not necessary and doesn't have any affect on your warranty. That's what we're saying.

naimcohen,
Please let us know what you find out.

-----------------------------------------------------

But, somehow, I don't think that Dell would want people calling in every time they added a new non-Dell program, a new hard drive, or a new RAM module to their $300 Dell computer.

What is Dell going to do? Keep a customer log of models and serial numbers of "approved" additions? By doing so, Dell would be giving tacit "approval" to the addition, perhaps even incurring liability for any problems.

If Dell didn't want to allow changes, they'd seal their boxes, like some manufacturers (now out of business) used to do. With little stickers on the edges of the case that said, "Breaking this Seal will Void your Warranty".

Nah. Dell's Limited Warranty terms are pretty clear. If there's a product feature that isn't mentioned in the documentation (like built-in video or, like their 400SC Servers, a fully-functional, but undocumented, AGP slot), Dell won't support or warranty the function of the undocumented feature. But unless you mis-treat the computer or a defective add-in melts something, Dell isn't going to refuse service on the Dell portion of the PC.
