Dell vs. Hewlett Packard vs. all others, help!

I want a new computer.

NOTE:

1) It should not be more than $1000 if a great graphics card (geforce 2 ultra and up) is not included
2) I don't want to order online
3) I want a system that's as cheap as possible with the best performance, and that can last for 2 years

I know of a Best Buy with Hewlett packard's nearby. Those however don't seem to be all that good for gamers. Where can I see where and what systems are being sold in my state? I've been to dell.com, no info on that.

Oh, who makes the best computers now?

I would recommend building your own. Or ordering from a small computer shop, thats the best way to come up with a decent price that will last you a while.

I would recommend Dell, from experience (2 workstatoins, and 1 laptop) i would say hands down dell...

service is great, and their machines are great too...

You will get a crap of a computer from Dell or from RETAILERS in your price range. If you buy online, you will get a much better PC - better CPU (speed-wise and BRAND-wise 🙂), more RAM and a much freakin better videocard (not-GeForce2-mx-wise 🙂)

You MUST go look at Computer Shopper magazine sold everywhere - just scroll through the pages and find some attractive ads for online stores. Good luck!

7-Up,
Check out Outside Loop Computers (www.outsideloop.com). The owners are Bill and Dave Jeffers, located in Longmount CO. Great systems, reasonable proces, they'll work within your specs and budget, top shelf components, outstanding tech support, I could go on. I've bought two systems, recommended OLP to several friends who have bought systems. See how OLP rates at: http://www.resellerratings.com/vendone.cgi?OutsideLoopComputers

OLP offers both AMD and Intel systems, components, etc.
You will not be disappointed.

<<I don't want to order online>>

?????

<<and that can last for 2 years>>

Any $1000 puter will be crap in 2 years

Dude, I bought a DELL, hooked to the internet and surfed some sites about building a computer. 3 months later I built our second computer for about 1/3 the price of a store bought box,And it out performed it also. The rest is History (6 running on home network). Dont Buy , Just BUILD.

WARNING: Building a computer may become habit forming and require that you spend all your time and money searching the FS/FT and HOT DEALS forums for continual upgrades.🙂

look for local computer shop...they usually have better system to offer.

why bother building one? when you find one that's exactly to your wish spec.

gil11542,

I'm with you, my man. Even though many manufacturers now charge less "overhead", you can still buy a PC for less. Of course you don't get the "24x7 tech support", but... BAH! Who needs it.

However, you can find some companies with very tight overcharging margin, and admit it - it is nice to just get a PC without having to manually apply the thermal compount, sticking in the RAM, installing drivers and stuff.. ABS-PC makes nice machines... Many companies found in Computer Shopper actual magazine are pretty good.

SevenUp, I didn't even notice you wanting to keep that PC for 2 years... You will feel its age in about 6 months, and it will refuse to run any new game in about 1.5 years. In 2 years, you will probably be able to do some minor word processing, but that's about it 🙂

I never had the same CPU for over a year (which of course involved a new mobo and sometimes RAM)..

its really hard to build one yourself cheaper than dell if you count buying software. lots of people don't, but you need software, else, whats the point?

I'd recommend building your own PC. If you don't quite know whwat to put in it, ask around.

If not that, then Dell is the only solution, IMO. I would never buy an HP, Compaq or similar, and I would never buy something from a small computer shop.

Why is it you don't want to order anything online?

Forget about Computer Shopper. Ask here n the forums if you decide to build your own.

That's just not true. I built the Athlon 650 system that i'm typing on and it will run any game you throw at it perfectly. As long as your video card will run the games any processor over 500 should run them fine. I love upgrading hardware as much as the next guy but do I need to? No.
BTW, I built this system two years ago.

If you are going to buy OEM, DEFINATELY buy Dell. They are the best vs. the other OEMs. HP and Compaq are straight junk. Micron is another one to look at. We use Microns at work and i've never seen one fail or have problems. Plus their price is compairable to Dell. But Dell is the best.

But i'm of course with everyone else. Build if you can!!!!
