So I got this Vostro 1500, T5270 1.4 ghz cpu, 2 gig memory and 250 gig hard drive for $539 shippped, I am thinking, what a deal. I reformat and reiall XP to get rid of the Dell junk. Then I decide to run cpuz to see if speedstep is running and that the specs are. It says its a L7300 Merom and running at 1.6 ghz !!!

This is the cpuz screenshot, 1.44.1 version

So whats the story here please ??? Help for a noob to this area (laptop cpu's)

Either CPU-Z isn't reading it correctly: The L7300/T5270 is a 1.4GHz processor: http://processorfinder.intel.c...tails.aspx?sspec=sla3s or your processor is running faster than normal.

According to Intel's spec sheets about the Core 2 Duo, only the L7500 (800MHz FSB) and the T5200 (533MHz FSB) run at 1.6GHz:
http://processorfinder.intel.c...tails.aspx?sSpec=SLA3R
http://processorfinder.intel.c...tails.aspx?sSpec=SL9VP

Maybe run a benchmark or another program that gives max CPU speed to double check.

BTW, I tried v 1.4 and v 1.44.1 and they both said 1.6 !!! Any other ideas on programs to try ? free ones ? I thought CPUZ was virtually never wrong. However, 1.4 said vcore was .9, and 1.44.1 said 1.013

Here are some alternative CPU identifiers:

Maybe one of them will give you the correct reading?

Thanks jpeyton ! But now its more confusing than ever. I have all of them up at the same time, and they are all different, and I have no idea which is correct !

Right here !

Maybe some benchmark I could run ????

For one thing make sure your laptop is in High Performance mode. On Power Saver mode the laptop tends to underclock, and I got some pretty messed up readings when it was in the process of it (When my processor downclocked it would show it went from 2Ghz (stock) to 2.8Ghz (yeah right :p) and then down to 1.6.

Sure, try Sandra Lite and see what the CPU benchmark and system info says.

I am so used to desktops, and these tools seem to always agree on those, or its rare that they don't. I find it disturbing that I can't tell when "speedstep" or other things are running.

BTW, what do you think of the notebook build quality? I was SO tempted to pick up that Vosto 1500 deal...you really can't touch its value. 2GB & 250GB HD standard!

I picked up a vostro 1400. 14.1inch screen
T7100 merom that runs at 1.6ghz.
cpu-z screenshots: http://picasaweb.google.com/ja...singT7100RamHDDAndWifi
intel specs: http://processorfinder.intel.c...tails.aspx?sspec=sla4a

2gb ram, 120gb hd, bluetooth, wlan a b g n, 8400Mgs oc'd, 6-cell batt, firewire, 4usb, v92, lan, expresscard 34/54, dvdrw 8x, vga, svideo, card-reader, vista home premium, 1yr inhome warranty. bought it off ebay for $520+29.95 shipping

Nice purchase on the 1500 mark, wonder if you lucked out and they shipped you an upgraded pc. do the rest of the build specs match up to what you ordered? I love the build quality of this laptop, wish i had the 9-cell backup battery. And, check out the screenshots to see my 45% gpu overclock :)

cpu runs at 9 x 200FSB. primes at 1.29 V in cpu-z, sits at 1.38 V, and idles in low power at 1.013 V

gpu can clock between 80/200/140 to 600/1200/735 core/shader/memory

cpu stays cool, gpu gets hot when oc'd really high playing cod4, but doesn't crash.

cpu maxes around 66C, gpu maxes around ~96C
