Not to crap on your thread but rather the Vostro... This is one of the cheapest, most worthless laptops I have ever owned. Bought one for my wife about 1.5 years ago, she now uses a MBA while the Vostro collects dust.

What exactly were the shortcomings of the Vostro?

And a more expensive, stylish, and popular laptop became your wife's primary choice?

You don't say...

The fit and finish of the Vostro was terrible. Where different pieces joined together there were visible gaps, exposing the innards. The screen bezel had a raised spot/bubble that when pushed down on would snap back into place but eventually pop back out again. You could also see backlight leakage in this area. The screen brightness was uneven and had terrible viewing angles.

I also had to take apart the Vostro a couple times to clean out the vent area. It would get clogged with dust and run very hot. We have 2 other laptops in the house that never have that problem.

Business lines of laptops (Vostro) are generally a better build then the consumer line (Inspiron). However, it would appear Dell's build quality overall has decreased vastly.

Sounds like you got a lemon and perfectly worth sending it back to Dell or where ever you bought it. I can't imagine every single Vostro has the same problems you described and for a $600 portable, you get what you pay for.

Although I'd personally prefer a Lenovo.
