Dell upgrade

Ok, remember my thread about the DELL problems
Dimension 8100? Previous Thread

Well...now the guy wants to check out upgrading Mobo, CPU (prefers P4) and add in a DVD burner while we're at it.

Any suggestions on board make **will need to take RDRAM** he just bought 4 sticks to go with his Intel 850 Dell installed board, CPU (Intel), and DVD burner and DVD Rom makes?
Would like to get him a good price on these components....no more than say...$500? But that could be flexible to some degree.

Plan to add a 2nd HDD...picked up a Seagate Barracuda 80GB today to use as primary drive swapping out his old 60GB as slave.

Also, would I be able to use the Dell case he has? or should I swap that too?
This case has only one fan, I looked around for fan mounts but couldn't locate any (help ?)
or should I use a PCI fan card?

**Any ideas greatly appreciated, thanks guys**

His current specs:
Dell Dimension 8100
P4 1.4Ghz
1.0GB RDRAM 4 x 256MB
Intel 850 board Socket 423
60GB HDD
WinXP Pro
standard optical drives and peripherals
except he's got an HP Plotter 430 I think

Yikes, a GIG of RDRAM!!??? You could use an Asus P4T-E if you could find one, 400Mhz FSB up to a 2.4Ghz P4 I believe, or an Asus P4T533-c, which has the 533Mhz FSB and can go up to a 3.06GHz P4, although it will likely be difficult to find either one. After spending the money for a GIG of RDRAM, I would definatly try and find something though. I would recomend getting a new case as well, as the Dell case probably isn't very well ventilated, and may be tricky to get a non-dell motherboard in. I had an Asus P4T-E motherboard with my previous computer, and it was stable, and I got a decent overclock out of it as well(ran my 1.6Ghz P4 and 2.1Ghz for over a year). I also had an A-open motherboard with the 850 chipset that was also pretty good, although I can't remember the model number. In any case, the only Rdram chipsets are the 850 and the 850E(sis develped a couple, but no motherboards made it to market that I know of). If you could find a P4T533-C and put a 3.06Ghz P4 on it, it would still be a pretty fast system. Good luck!!

Thanks Stevty

Maybe I should RMA that RAM?....just stuck that in a couple weeks ago....
get a credit and grab something else maybe?

My thoughts exactly on the Mobo....going to be hard to find one that takes RDRAM. dang.

What do you like for the Burner/Rom and any good case suggestions?
He doesn't need anything fancy, but I definitely want something with some cooling
esp if I go to a 2.8 or a 3.0 P4

OK....I found this
Asus board link

How does that look?

Tiger Direct may have it, but it is $159

Do you think I could get by with a 2.80 P4? Or should I just go with a 3.0?
How does this look: (?)

P4/3.06

Guys...?

What are your preferred DVD combo drives and I need a good DVD/CD ROM too
and CASE.....
Xoxide with an Enermax 420W Noise taker PSU
$154.98
ripoff? or should I go with an Enermax?

suggestions please?

Mahalo!

NEC 2500A or 2510A for dual layers DVD writer. It is around 70 for 2500A and 90 for 2510A. Lite-on 851S or 812S is also good.

The 3.06Ghz P4 is the only CPU with hyperthreading that a Rambus chipset will support, so thats what I would go with, and it will be quite fast with a gig of RDRAM. You could get that Xoxide case without a power supply. I am using a 350W enermax with my 3.06Ghz cpu with no problems, and you won't need a power supply with SATA connections since there are no rambus chipsets with SATA. Don't really have any suggestions about a DVD burner, cause I haven't gotten one yet.
