Dell Unveiling Its Own Brand of Printers

They're not Dells own printers, they are rebadged Lexmarks. Lexmark makes an OK printer at best.
Not really positive if they are just rebadged printers or not but I would think it would be a pain not to be able to run to a local store when you are in the middle of a large printing project to get a new cartridge.

Why? They would just use Lexmark carts.

What NB said - the rebadged Lexmarks that Compaq put out a couple years back used Lexmark cartridges available at any store selling IJ carts.

They're proprietary cartridges - you'll have to buy them through Dell. The drivers have an ink ordering system built into them though that alerts you when you are hitting low levels of ink (a buddy of mine designed it).

Hopefully, Dell's proprietary ink is a little cheaper than Lexmark ink.

Gee Mr. Wizard, aren't ALL printer cartridges proprietary, in that Epson/HP/Compaq/Brother/Lexmark/Canon only fit their own printers? Does this fact about Dell's surprise you?

I think Dell will do well w/ their printers, it's an easy "tack on sale" after you've already ordered your computer from them.

I never said it did, genius. Since someone asked if you could just use Lexmark carts I thought I'd clear it up for him.

And I'm sure it upsets people, but hey, companies like Dell are out to make MONEY, and the money in printers is not in the units themselves, it's in the consumables.

the software and peripherals guys will hate this. a lot of them refused to sell printer carts. orders under $100 not wanted. guess they'll try to sell 6 at a time.

my lexmark is a hunk of garbage. cartridges cost too much, and the stupid thing broke anyway

I did buy it in 1998 though, still, it just takes up my desk space :|
