I've got a 2405 which is basically the same thing but 4" larger and is the actual god of gaming but the 2005 is a close 2nd.

Great LCD for gaming, I finally decided to bite the bullet and just see it for myself and have been using it for about 30 days($345 shipped after a buttload of dell coupons! :) ... and after years of reading these forums I finally decided to register and post an experience.

let me tell you I've read a post or two on these forums from some guy trying to compare this LCD with his 2 year old NEC CRT.. lol.. thats like comparing apples to oranges, of course there are obvious differences - the technology is different! If you want to compare this with anything compare it to a 3 year old 23ms LCD- these guys have come a long way!

I play HL2, HL2 DM, CS:S, Call of Duty:UO, UT2K4, UT99, and recently installed FarCry and SWAT4 *note* some games do not have an "in-game" video setting of the native 1680x1050 - so you might have to go into your /system or /main Game folder and open up a game.cfg or game.ini file- change it manually to 1680x1050. Also if your game supports Vsync turn it on- while it may lower your frame rate its almost necessary to smooth out the experience. I've had to do this with all 3 of my LCDs although I leave vsync off when using my CRT. If you do not use the native res settings while gaming and not using Vsynch, you WILL have poor visuals and performance.

Yes the lamp is very bright out of the box/stock... so before you post any complaints about it, learn how to use the OSD and turn the brightness down :) ... the panel then becomes very bearable and the lamp bleeding/washing becomes non-existent.

also, if you're having trouble finding 1680x1050 hi-res/hi-quality Wallpaper this is a good resource: Interfacelift Wallpapers ....

Now if someone here has used a TV tuner card/external source for watching satellite on this 2005FPW, please make a recommendation. I'm now on the hunt for one.

So anyhow I think thats about it... if you want pics let me know and I'll post them ... good luck!

This monitor is incredible. I've had mine since last Wednesday, and I still can't get over how much I love it. For the price (~ $400, plus shipping and tax), you can't beat it.

I play UT2004 and HL2 mainly, but I'm anxious to fire up a MMO or something along those lines. Widescreen gaming is simply awesome.

I have the 2005FPW and am returning it.

I agree with dotcombust that it is a great LCD for gaming. Of course, it is great with WoW since the monitor is the native resolution FOR WoW! :) If gaming was the only way the monitor was going to be used I would not be returning it.

To address dotcombust, I would ask what is wrong with comparing a product against the best. If a product is only compared to the worst then only the worst seem bad. This would be like a sportscaster comparing a new player to a high school student who has never played any sports. you bet... the new player can run circles around them. Of course, lowering standards is the norm in our society, especially in education. Personally, I would prefer the player be compared to a super star and the monitor compared to the best of the best.

The reason I am returning the monitor is due to the brightness. I did finally find the user guide online at Dell, but hey, even the two dell support techs and one manager didn't know they had an online user guide. They all told me that user guides for monitors were only sent with monitors purchased WITH a computer. Yeah Dell... (the same company that voids warranties for physical defects if you install an OS not purchased from Dell.)

Anyway, the monitor was so bright that even turning the brightness down to 0 (making some colors turn black) it was too bright to use (BY ME) for more than one hour at a time.

Dell is having UPS pick up the monitor and paying for it's return and says they will issue a full refund.

Be sure to get a 3 year warranty... the sales rep said it was three years but I was told today that my warranty was only 90 days. Tier 2 tech support told me this after I insisted in getting a warranty agreement in writing. Online purchasing said to look at the invoice received AFTER you purchase the monitor to see how long your warranty is... there was no paperwork with my monitor and the box was marked refurbished, even though I didn't know I was purchasing a refurb. (found it in fine print after the fact. My fault.)

What games do you want to play? Many newer games like HL2, WoW, EQ2, etc all natively support widescreen format.

That being said, I own one and its the single best purchase I've made in computer hardware. I can't sing its praises enough.

I have had a 2005 since last December. I can't compare it to your other monitor but I can say that I am really satisfied with the performance it provides. Mostly gaming although the wide screen makes it nice to watch dvd's and browse the web. I think it only fitting that I mention that I also have a bfg 6800u and that in itself compliments the end result. I will never forget the initial response I had when I first put it into play.....awesome to say the least!! Getting very accustomed to it by now and can't really imagine anything else that would suffice as this monitor does (thought about getting the 2405 but just can't bare to pay the $ for what it provides).

Happy hunting!!!

Did you try adjusting the brightness in the graphics card control panel? The monitor's OSD only lets you turn the backlight down a tiny bit, while the graphics card's control panel lets you do a lot more fine tuning. If you are using DVI, you definitely want to leave the OSD alone and perform all of your calibrations in the graphics control panel.

Absolutely nothing wrong with comparing the best to the worst of them- if youre comparing -->LCDs <--...... LCDs and CRTs arent the same technology .. .. so yeah you missed the point... My point was that although not the same technology LCD performance is catching up to the best performing CRT and should not be bashed for it. Speaking with experience in owning 3 LCDs over the last 4 years AND many CRTs I feel I make a valid point. I wasnt sold on LCD for gaming until I picked up one of these 12ms 2005FPWs. Although not the fastest response time or greatest contrast ratio compared to other higher end 19 and 20"ers, I'm very satisfied with the variety of games that I play.

Brightness takes couple of days of getting used to. But once you do, everything else will look dull and dim. I would personally use the monitor for about a week before deciding whether to keep or return.

This is a very good monitor. You do need to turn the brightnest down to at least 50. Then you need to go into your video card to adjust the gamma and brightness there. Once you do that, it's in the top tier of gaming LCD's. I do agree that it's set way way way too bright factory default but all LCD's are set that way so that they look great in the showroom floor. Dell's use the same LCD's as the ones in the Apple Cinema Displays. These are good LCD's.
