Dell Small Business again. I don't know...the dot pitch on the 20" is a little better. 20" is not on sale though. You can get the 20" occasionally on sale for $750. Would you buy the 18" for $449 or the 20" for $750?

Thanks to all. I ordered mine tonight for $449. I noticed that they also had refurb units available for $399. If you want a lot of pixels on a budget, you might want to check it out.

When I first got this monitor, I was impressed due to it's large screen and space-saving size. I had a cheap 17" monitor that I planned to replace. However, the first thing I noticed is that text is blurry. With clear type and without, it's just not up to CRT standards. Another thing that bugged me was the low refresh rate of 60hz. I kicked this back up to 75hz just because the flicker was really annoying. Supposedly this will not harm the monitor. Finally, I tried playing CS on it... not horrible, but no where near as good as my VERY CHEAP 17 " monitor. If you do a lot of gaming and want this monitor, be prepared for a significant downgrade from your CRT.

I can live with the low refresh rate and the sub-par gaming performance, but is there any way for me to sharpen up the text? I sit in front of a Dell 19" CRT all day at work. After comparing the text clarity between the two, the 1800fp SUCKS.

I would really like to keep the LCD, but I want an LCD that will perform as good or better than my current CRT. Is this possible?

Lastly, my opinions are from running the monitor in analog mode, I do not have a card with DVI connections. If I were to get a card w/ DVI, would it make that big of a difference? Please be bluntly honest here, don't try to sugar coat things and tell me how great this monitor is. Will DVI give me the boost in performance that I am looking for?

I have seen the monitor hooked up with both VGA and DVI. The DVI definitely improves the sharpness of the text.

I'll bet dollars to donuts you're not running it at 1280 x 1024. At a native resolution, an LCD has "perfect" sharpness.

Another thing that bugged me was the low refresh rate of 60hz. I kicked this back up to 75hz just because the flicker was really annoying.

Since an LCD is illuminated by the same fluorescent lights no matter what refresh rate you set it at, you are imagining this so-called "flicker change," or it's caused by something other than the monitor.

I would really like to keep the LCD, but I want an LCD that will perform as good or better than my current CRT. Is this possible?

CRTs have several technical advantages over LCDs, but flicker & native resolution sharpness are not among them. Set your graphics settings to the the ones written on the big huge sticker that covered the screen when you received it & then decide if it's good enough.

Thanks for the input guys, I'll definitely pick up a card with DVI connections and check it out and decide then if I want to keep the monitor or not.

I do have the monitor set to 1280x1024 and I do see maybe not blurred text, but pixelated text at the least. And the flicker may be more of my eyes not used to the brightness of the monitor. However, as I mentioned before, I am not overly impressed with the monitor. Hopefully a new video card will change my thinking as I really would like to keep it.

there is a known issue with using "clear view" on these screens... but many say they love it and its great... personally, i think the clearview is essential... i just bought the 2000FP last week along with an ATI9700pro and all I can say is aaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! unbelievable how clear and crisp and bright everything is... i was using a 19" crt and i thought that was pretty clear for a crt... HAHAHAHAH what a joke.. i hooked it up to use "dual display" and realized i couldnt bare to look at that thing any more, ever! i researched both the 1800FP and the 2000FP models and found much less complaints with the 2000FP... i know im happy! i palyed Quake3 once and to my surprise i did not notice any type of ghosting either... SPECTACULAR! another thing that is better in my opinion is the native resolution of 1600x1200... its a 4:3 ratio and things look good, rather than 1280x1024 5:4 ratio which slightly squashes the image vertically... in other words, circles become ovals... (hardly noticable but there) anywho, i think it was worth the extra $$$ for the 2000FP if you can get it for a HOT DEAL like I did.. about $750 shipped (on sale and used a 15% off coupon code)
