Dell U2713hm USB Hub issues

Dear all,

Just finished building my new Windows 8 computer based on an Asus Z87-K mobo and Intel Haswell 4670-k. I'm having an issue with the USB ports (all plugged directly into the mobo).

When I plug in my keyboard and mouse they work fine (both into USB 2.0). When I plug in the U2713hm's USB3 hub into a USB 3 port onto the mobo the other devices start losing power and restarting eventually just dying.

Any ideas what's going on? I think it's probably a power issue but surely the USB3 hub in the monitor is powered by the monitor and not drawing from the mobo? A quick search showed that there could be an issue with the U2713hm USB hub or there's some kind of incompatibility with the mobo.

Thanks!

WestHej

If your USB is is not powered, you are in effect stealing limited power from the system USB channels. I would never use a hub that is not separately powered. But, that might just be me. :)

Supposedly, your hub should be powered by the monitor - but - maybe it is not. If it is just an extension of the mobo's USB ports, then it is stealing power from them. What are the specs for the Dell hub? It might be a good question to ask Dell - what is the hub's power source?

the ports turn off if you turn the monitor off, so they're almost certainly powered by the monitor.

Not necessarily. The monitor could be simply tapping into the mobo USB circuit. When turned off, that tap could also be disconnected. The answer really lies with Dell in that it is a specific design feature not cited for users. Sounds like a design defect. It would be useful to know exactly how the monitor is connected to the mobo.
