I have been doing a lot of research on purchasing a decent all round IPS based monitor that will work for Gaming, Movies and everything else.
This Dell U2414H seems to fit the bill.

I am curious if anyone on this forum has seen one in action or has bought one yet. Its not cheap but relatively affordable. It also doesn't hurt that it has one of the thinnest bezels found on any monitor on the market today.

IPS= In Plane Switching -

The Dell U2414H is almost identical to the U2412M except that it has HDMI and no DVI.

From what I have read the matte on the U2414H is not as grainy and has a slight gloss anti matte that puts it somewhere between a gloss and a matte screen.
I don't play heavy FPS competitive online anymore so I am not worried about the response and TFT gave it a good rating.

Tes. Fixed - thanks!

I have my monitor selection down to the Dell S2440L, U2412M or the U2414H.
The S2440L seems nice but its screen is extremely glossy and after seeing some videos/pics on it.. I am not sure if it will be a good choice as I sit in a well lit room.

I'm very happy with my u2412m. There are some trade-offs to going 16:10 vs. 16:9 aspect ratio, though.

The 16:10 aspect ratio has letterboxing in all widescreen movies, but even the 16:9 aspect ratio on the 2414 has letterboxing on some movies as well (that are shot in, I believe, 21:9).

Moreover, since most games use Hor+ FOV, you do actually lose a little FOV in 16:10 vs. 16:9.

I really like 16:10 for productivity stuff, web browsing, etc.

I also like my u2412m until the sun sneaks under the blinds and drapes around 4pm to 6pm.
I went as far as to put a sheet of black hobby board on the top half of a side window to block the sun more.
I read there is coating on the inside of the screen that can be removed with warm water and soap on the u2412m .

Lol... I have done similar things to get Sun glare off from screens in the past. It drives me crazy. Shrug I guess its the tradeoff for dealing with screens.
At one of the old places I stayed at.. I pulled a broken sheet and drapped it over the existing curtains to cut out some of the sunlight...

I knew I couldn't be the only person with sun glare problems.
My wife opens six windows so a bird and cats get more sun I close and seal the windows day after day.
Behind two pc desks is a window to rear yard that is never opened except for changing the drapes

I did some research on IPS based TVs and it seems that while the viewing angles are nice, the shortcomings (for now) seem to outweigh the positives.
Heres a snip from a poster on AVS forums.

http://www.avsforum.com/t/1445106/dont-all-leds-tvs-have-ips-panels

"No, many LCD LED-lit sets (or CCFL-lit sets) don't use IPS. Most use some sort of SVPA or MVA.

IPS does have much better viewing angles but they also have noticeably worse black levels and lower contrast ratios so they make not look as good for movie room/dark room type viewing and dark scenes look kinda washed out. I prefer SPVA/MVA type screens for an HDTV myself.

Samsung doesn't use IPS at all nor Sony nor Sharp. LG seems to use a lot of IPS though. Not sure about Panasonic, if they are bragging about it, then maybe they do. I'm not convinced IPS is something to brag about for an HDTV though where deep blacks and high-contrast are often a foremost consideration. Unless you like to view your TV from odd angles all the time or watch with big crowds of friends sitting all spread across in one row with some out on the edges. "

I hope this clears it up

so would this mean that for watching video from a computer you might not want to use a ips monitor

I have not owned an IPS based computer screen but my next purchase will be one so I cannot comment on quality of watching movies.
I am sure there are plenty of people on this forum that can give you proper feedback
