i configured a 300m just a few days ago and today i decided to go online and check the order status. before i sign in to my account i notice that dell is offerring some deals on notebooks, namely free double memory. i think to myself, woohoo, i'll cancel my order and place a new one. well, the exact same configuration (with the exception of the added free upgrades/promotions) now costs $371 more. what the hell? it seems as if dell's "hot deals" really aren't such hot deals after all......

uh, i thought this was well known. Their "free" dvd burners & cd burners are only free b/c they jack up the price of whatever the burner costs etc.

They just have a different sale every week -- one week the LCDs are cheap, another week extra memory is cheap, another week you get a free burner. As the sale changes, the old item goes back to the pre-sale price.

Aside from Hot Deals, the trick is to buy during a sale on an upgrade you want that's normally expensive, like to a 19" LCD. Buying when memory is on sale isn't a great idea since you can just go to crucial.com and get the memory much cheaper.
