Ordering my boss a new laptop and I mentioned getting a ssd but dell doesnt give you much info does anyone know what type of drives they use. Here is the part number

341-7769-128GB Dell Mobility Solid State Hard Drive, 2.5MM Latitude

Do they support trim and what kind of speed do the see? I dont see a 128gb on samsung. Should I just order a new one and put it in myself and get a regular hd
Last time I checked there was no Samsung SSD that was worth its money. Lower 4kb random write speeds than a conventional harddrive in used state isn't something to be fond of.

I'd buy a conventional HDD and replace it with a Indilinx or Intel SSD and then sell the HDD. Probably even cheaper than buying the SSD from dell to start with.. though no idea about the warranty.

Samsung ssd in its used state for 4kb random writes gets beaten by the vraptor. In a new state its about 2.5x faster. New ones should support trim (although I don't think the dell ones do, may have changed) so they won't be getting to used state.

I got one in my desktop and its still night and day difference compared to even a vraptor for use. (My one supports Trim as well)

It doesn't make much sence to buy samsung ones though as you can get much better Indilinx controller ssd for a similar price.

Probably cheaper to order the laptop with a spindle drive and then buy an SSD separately. You will get better performance from it too.

order the laptop with a low end mechanical drive, and purchase a good SSD on the side.

Well there was only a $60 dollar difference between the 80gb mechanical drive and the $300 128gb ssd drive, something todo with the discount rate so i went ahead and got it. The dell business account is a little weird you get better deals when you get the rep to quote it

Yeah, I didn't get to do much dell quoting and purchasing at my last job, but enough to know how goofy their pricing can be. Their pricing is good on average though.

I also like how they have a ton of different support numbers which all have the same automated response system with no greeting to identify which division/department you called.
