I had an issue with my CRT monitor so dell said they would send me another one. Well... they sent me a flat screen one (not a flat panel). But, the picture doesn't seem as crisp as it did on my CRT monitor. Also, there are 2 thin very distinct horizontal lines. The only thing pretty well i do on my monitor is gaming. Will the flat screen be better for gaming or worse? I know that flat screen are more expensive and i really don't care.

Will the flat screen be better for it gaming?

How the hell can i get these annoying lines to go away?

i find that the flat screens are a lot nicer than non-flat screens.

the lines are part of the trinitron tube, you can make it go away

You may not notice them after awhile, however some people unfortunately do,the AG wires you meantion are normal on Trinitron and Diamondtron tubes,if they really bother you , then I suggest you get a shadowmask tube or a LG Flatron monitor which uses slot mask technology.

My only options are to:
1. send it back and get a crt monitor from dell

2. keep it

i ain't going to buy another monitor cause dell sent me this.

You never want to buy Dell again because they gave you an upgraded monitor?

I don't like Dell, but even I can't see the logic in that

If it's not a LCD, it's a tube (CRT). So you don't like the flat aspect of it? lol.

Let me get this straight: you prefer goldfish bowls to flat monitors?

The fact that it is a flat screen has nothing to do with if it's a CRT or if it's an aperture grill. It just means the glass on the front is flat. You could get a shadowmask that has a flat screen and your monitor is still a CRT.

All monitors, flat screen or not, are CRTs so if they're not CRTs, they're flat panels.

The two lines are part of the monitor, you can't get rid of them. I think you should just get used to it, an aperture grill needs these two wires to hold together the mask, which helps seperate the colors. The aperture grill allows much more light to pass through than shadowmasks(the kind without the two wires), thus you are getting a much brighter image if you keep the aperture grill(along with the two lines).

Though there is one big problem with your type of monitor that affects its crispness, the brightness. If you set your monitor too bright, it will start to lose it's crispness and sharpness. Try turning the contrast and brightness lower till it is sharp.

Hope that answers all your questions, and good luck!

Ok, thanks for the answers guys. I have decided to send it back and get a bubble one again. The lines really piss me off on outdoor maps. I haven't noticed any difference in picture quality except this one is a little darker. I don't really like settling for anything that i have to "get used to."

Wow.

Just tell them you don't want a trinitron, then.

No need to get an old tech goldfish bowl.

You want a flat screen CRT that is not an aperture grill type.

Maybe they don't make the goldfish bowls anymore?

Exactly, get a flat shadowmask, plenty of really good ones out there, hitachi CM721, viewsonic G90f, Samsung 955df

What model monitor is it? Because I think all the Dell monitors are aperture grille except the E771.

Give it a chance, your eyes will adjust to the lines and you won't see them unless you're looking for them soon enough. They're a perfectly normal part of most modern monitors. Whether the screen is flat or convex makes no difference.

Nope lines won't go away their 2 wires that are part of the monitor. All trinitron or diamondtron types have them. Just their less noticeable in some monitors or the user gets used to it.

I have a 15" Dell from December 1991 but it'll do 1024x768, might do the trick.

BTW, I love my Trinitron monitor, lines and all.

Flat screens aren't necessarily sharper than non-flat screens, a little blurrier, but I guess you are a big time discriminator of detail. However, flat screens have much better geometry and do not reflect light unless it is straight on. Aperture Grille rules. That is also another factor contributing to the blurriness. The Shadow Mask that you were using before displays sharper picture, but many people prefer the Aperture Grille because it is brighter and has more vibrant colors. In other words, it is better for multimedia.

if i look at my dell p990 from more than 5 inches away, i can't even see the lines. and i can never see them unless there is a white background. compared to my hitachi cm751 (shadow mask) the dell is a lot brighter, better colors, and sharper. i'd give the lines a chance...
