Dell SC440 for $387 + S/H/T($200 off and processor upgrade free)

I picked up an SC420 previously when they had the processor upgrade deal.

The SC440 is a tower server with some potential limitations on the graphics side if you plan on making it into a general use system. I modded my SC420 to take a PCI-E 16X card. There are many different ways to do this (google - SC420 mod PCI). I used a dremel and 15 minutes. I have NOT done this yet on my SC440. There is onboard video on this system.

Spec sheet SC440

To get this price, go to dell small business page and use the promotions section on the left side of the page.

I am buying again because this is a very quiet computer at a good price. YMMV.

It looks like there's a full-width PCI-E x16 port that's running at x8 speed. No modding needed.

Anyone tried a PCI Xpress card in this badboy yet? I'm thinking about getting this but it's dependant on whether or not I can use a decent graphics card in it.

The online operator manual says: "one 2.5-Gb/sec PCIe x8 (slot 2)"

BUT - in reading further on PowerEdgeForum, Dell closed the SC430 BIOS for Video support on the 8X slot. Work around was 4x slot, but at full speed.

I am not holding out too much hope on this. I need a server anyway. Mine comes on the 30th. Will report back.

please do. that would be great if it is C2D compatible

my 400SC is still running great (best deal back in 2003, 600 dollars, P4 3.2Ghz 😀)

go to dell> medium and large business. pick Dimension E521, add a 3800+ X2 and drop the 17" display.
you get a:
3800+ X2
80G
512M
real pci-e slot (+6150 built in nvidia video)
oh and windows XP
for $274[

:Q

Holy crap, I'm tempted to buy one. I'm assuming a 3800X2 would blow my P4 3.0 out of the water...and it even takes DDR2...agh..must..resist...

Edit: My neighbors want to buy a system..maybe I could sell them mine..

That deal on the Medium and Large Business is hot! 350 ~ shipped for a Dual core AMD 3800+ and the others? Couldn't build it cheaper...just built a rig but I want to get that one...

Mmm...if I buy from there will I have to do anything special? Also can't seem to get financing for one person if I buy that way...

Any advice?

Not sure on the financing thing, but anyone can order from Dell Business divisions as far as I can tell. I have ordered from the Small Business division many times.

I got the $274 price on the E521
and estimated shipping to NY adds $71 on top of that

I don't know but thats what it comes up with? seems like others are getting the same.
I was just pointing it out that it may be a better deal and less hassles than an SC420.(might even make a better server) not to mention upgradeable at least a little bit CPU wise.

The E521 is a better deal for me. I cancelled the SC440.

Will see how quiet the E521 is......the SC family is silly quiet.

this x2 3800+ at $370.00 shipped in cludeing tax, is pretty good, but not a hot, deal only warm compared to a system i got 2 months ago at compusa.

it was a 939 socket sempron 3300+ nvidia 6150 graphics motherboard
512mb pc3200 ram
120gb hard drive
dvd-rom/cd-rw
keyboard, mouse, speakers, case, psu, win Xp home, 1 year warranty and tech support
basically almost the same performance just half the cpu.

it was $200.00 after $150.00 rebate which i got 2 weeks ago.

total was $215.00 with tax, with $155.00 I could buy a 3800+ and put it in and sell the sempron for like $40.00

AM2 is a newer socket, but give no real perfromance boost, but since this system would most like never need the cpu upgraded, will perfrom about the same.

so its a warm deal, if you need a good lowend dual core system.

For those looking at the E521, remember these things...

1. The PSU does 18A on each of two 12V rails, but there is only ONE free 4pin power connector, and no PCIe power connector. And the 4pin is fairly far away from the video card. You will need a 6 inch adapter cable.

2. Get the DVDRW for an extra $10. As there are ZERO PATA connections on the motherboard.

3. If you want to add a video card, the E521 does NOT support dual slot video cards, they will not fit. So a 7950 GT, or the new X1950 Pro cards will be pretty much your best bets. Just make sure the video card is a single slot card.

Acctually the math would be more like....a system with your stats and this processor would cost around..545 or so....because the x2 is 370...so 215-40+370 = 545.

So it's still a better deal from what I can see...

Also you have to remember that it's less than half the power of the x2 even if we were just to talk about cores and speed of the cores....but you also leave out the huge performance variable the x2 has an advantage on as well..cache size. =)

Anyhow, not that you got a bad deal, just saying the parts I find hot about this deal!

AHH your math is way off, somebody has no idea what a AM2 X2 3800+ cpu costs, just recently they were onsale for $129.00, where the heck did you get $370.00 for a x2 3800+ AM2 socket????? they are $150.00 to $160.00 most places

and beside, for like $20.00 more you could go conroe E6300 and a ASROCK MOTHERBOARD and get like 50 to 100% more perfromance, depending on your overclock.

and thats not even the best price
