Dell restore disk question.

Hi all,
I would like to reformat and reinstall everything on my Dell Inspiron 5000.
Do I format the drive and then use the restore disk, or will running the
restore disk automatically wipe the drive before restoring?
I saw a significant difference in performance with my desktop machine when
I reformatted and reinstalled and I want to do the same with my notebook as
well.
