Dell really going AMD this time?

Having worked up the road at Dell I'm a bit skeptical, but this is the most interesting story I've heard about it in some time. It beats the crap out of the Dell selling AMD CPU story that happens at least once every year. The word is Dell is asking Asus, Quanta, and Hon Hai to get in with them on AMD based products.

Another ploy from Dell to work Intel? Antitrust posturing?

Its funny, this happens about every 6 months. I wonder if Dell and Intel renegotiate contracts bi-yearly. It would explain a lot.
For the record, I would be absolutely shocked if Dell ever carried a full line based on AMD. I think it would be suicide on their part. It is clear that Dell has benefited greatly from their close ties with Intel, I just cannot see them risking this relationship.

Dell is still selling AMDs after all these weeks.

Of course these are higher end chips from their business department. I think you are right - Dell makes some noises every once in a while probably to squeeze Intel a bit. With AMD starting to gobble up marketshare in notebooks and servers where in years past they had NO products, plus AMD taking a few more percentage points of the desktop market, Intel may not be quivering in their pants but they surely are aware of AMD. Dell is the ONLY large OEM holdout for Intel and they sell more desktops than any other.

The Digitimes report says, "Foxconn is currently producing AMD-based servers for Dell." The other companies have been notified by Dell to have designs ready in case Dell orders]/i] but Foxconn must already have orders placed by Dell.

The thing is that Dell selling AMD desktops would be great for AMD. May not be the best for Dell because they may not have as sweet a deal with Intel, but AMD has often been willing to sell for pretty cheap and this would be their chance for marketshare and name recognition. However unless Dell re-thinks how they put together a PC, I don't think most of the potential AMD systems would be much recommended from folks like us. Has anyone worked on Dell systems? The low end ones intentionally do not have video upgrade capabilities beyond PCI. The high end ones are back to being proprietary with 5 expansion slots (mATX is 4 slots, ATX is 7 slots, WTF is 5 slots?) and the motherboards do not mount using standard screw holes but instead slots in the board matching to tabs on the chassis, plus the actual cutout for the PSU is designed so that no standard PSU will fit without some cutting.
