Dell quizzes customers on AMD-based PC

by John G. Spooner, ZDNet News

Longtime Intel champion Dell Computer is asking customers if they would prefer computers with AMD chips. Is the company thinking switching to AMD processors?

Is longtime Intel champion Dell Computer testing the waters for home PCs based on Advanced Micro Devices processors?

A recent survey commissioned by the leading PC maker asks customers to state a preference between a PC based on AMD chips and one that uses Intel processors.

Dell is the only major North American PC maker to use Intel processors exclusively. Others, such as Compaq Computer, Gateway, Hewlett-Packard and IBM offer both Intel and AMD chips in their desktop lines.

Dell's status as the worldwide leader in PC sales would make a move to AMD chips a significant shift for the company. Founder and CEO Michael Dell has at times blasted AMD's Athlon processor as an unproven computing platform.

But these are desperate times in the PC business, and Dell could be looking for a way to further differentiate its systems from competitors or to offer lower prices.

IDC analyst Roger Kay said it would be advantageous for Dell to offer AMD because of pricing and performance. The Athlon is priced lower than chips like the Pentium 4 and offers similar or better performance.

The Dell survey first asks customers if they would consider AMD's Athlon and Duron processors, Intel's Celeron, Pentium III and Pentium 4 processors, and also PowerPC processors. It then asks participants to state which processors they would most and least prefer and why.

The survey concludes by asking, "Assume you are in the process of purchasing a new desktop computer for your home. Also assume that the two desktop computers you are considering have IDENTICAL product features with one exception. One desktop computer has an Intel Pentium III 1GHz processor and is priced at $1,099. The second desktop computer has an AMD Athlon 1GHz processor and is priced at $1,049. Which computer would you most prefer?"

Despite the implications of the survey, a Dell representative downplayed it, stating the document is not indicative of any change in the company's product plans.

"It's just market research and anticipating future demand," the representative said. It's "a chance to touch customers and get some feedback from them about what they're looking for...but it's not indicative of any certain move.

"We're always evaluating technology, and we'll make the right decision for the customer."

Who makes the better PC chip? Intel AMD
Analysts said that it wouldn't be surprising for Dell at some point to add Athlon or Duron processors to its Dimension PC line. The Dimension line is geared toward home and small and midsized business buyers, who are less likely to be concerned with which processors are inside their PCs, as long as the PCs perform well.

"With this sort of research, it looks like Dell is testing the waters for an AMD product," Kay said.

The survey was originally sent to Dell customers who had recently purchased a new PC, and who were then asked to fill it out on the company's Home and Home Office Web site, the Dell representative said.

They've been toying with the idea for quite awhile. I hear they are looking towards AMI to make their motherboards.

I think it's a foolish decision.

I bet they're in price negotiations with Intel right now and want to give them a scare.

I don't see anywhere on AMDZone where it proves that the survey is rigged, just a lot of their normal BS. Like they wouldn't be predudiced either? Heck, they're so biased they won't even print the word DELL.

As for DELL moving to AMD ... not likely, at least not in mass quantity.

1.) DELL gets special pricing from Intel that no other OEM gets
2.) Intel pays up to 60% of their advertising
3.) DELL's J.I.T. system is so tightly integrated with Intel's, this is how DELL can have no more than 5 days of components in their system at a time, while other OEMs aren't even close to this, inventory-wise. Just another of the reasons why DELL can stay cash-flow positive despite the current PC industry price wars. In comparison, IBM and Compaq are loosing $Billions in their Personal computer lines (and they both use a lot of AMD chips, so lower CPU prices doesn't always translate in to improved margins).
4.) Chipset problems are still a major issue in DELL's opinion.
5.) Michael and Andy are very close friends. May not seem significant, but I wouldn't overlook the fact.

But never say never to anything. DELL is blitzkrieging the server market, because that's the only place where there is any decent profit to be made for a box builder. So they are lowering their focus on desktops a bit. As such, they could do something like a value and/or mid line of desktops, based on AMD. But they will stay firmly tied to Intel for servers. And I'm not so sure Intel would object too much to something like this (other than pull their ad dollars for desktops only). Intel is less and less focused on desktop CPUs, and more interested in higher margin chips, ie. servers and specialized processors. With the acquisition of Compaq'a Alpha, Intel is going to own the server market. Sun has got to be bumming ...

AMDZone news from thursday....

<< Chris - You're not going to believe this one. On Dell's survey, the radio buttons are screwed up for Questions 2 and 3. You can only select one button ACROSS THE TWO QUESTIONS! So, if question 2 you say you most prefer the Athlon, and question 3 you say you least prefer the Pentium 4, and you answer in that order, than only Pentium 4 will be registered in the question. Moreover: That's question 2: "If you were purchasing a new personal computer for your household today, which one of the following processors would you MOST prefer and why? (Please select one)" And this is Question 3: "If you were purchasing a new personal computer for your household today, which one of the following processors would you LEAST prefer and why? (Please select one)" Note my browser, IE5, will only give you one radio button for each NAME attribute. Since both most and least have the same NAME="most_prefer", despite one question being most and one least, that only the second one will be recorded in the system!!! Moreover, look at the 11-point divvy: Again, both boxes have the same NAME, so only one is being sent, and THERE IS NO W3C STANDARD WAY TO DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN THE TWO IN THIS FORM, IT IS CONSIDERED MALFORMED. THE BROWSER CAN SEND WHATEVER IT WANTS, OR BOTH, IN ANY ORDER. I guess you're right. Dell is a bunch of ****-ups. Or a bunch of people who are trying to rig the **** out of a survey. >:-# ----- Steven B. Lewis >>

maybe you should check before you speak outta your @$$

Midnight Rambler, If you've actually read it, AMDZone did nothing but post an email. If you don't believe them, check the source code your self. Geez...

Actually the survey IS "rigged", but it's basically a stupid HTML mistake... You can only select ONE option between the two questions "Which would you most prefer" and "which would you least prefer". If you select Athlon for the first, and Celeron for the second, the survey registers Celeron for your answer...

Either way it's totally meaningless, it's not like Dell's gonna start shipping AMD any time soon anyway... :)

Well, you are WRONG on this one. From a post in the Anandtech News Forum:

Thank you for contacting ESupport Services

We apologize for the error you have encountered and thank you
for taking the time to report it.
Due to a coding error, the survey is not operating as it should
so I would suggest not taking it until a time it is fixed.
The problem has been reported, and Dell is working on resolving
it at this time. We hopefully will have it fixed soon.

Again, thank you for taking the time to report this to us.

Respectfully,
Webmaster, Stephen

Nice, NFS4. Funny that such a simple "mistake" was made. Do you think they'll ever fix it?
