That's right, quadruple memory, (or a $200 mail in rebate) but who wants 200 bucks when you can get 1gb of ram for 30 bucks, as opposed to the list price of $999

Link

Enjoy

I hate it when Dell lists a great system like the 340 at $699 and then makes you look far and wide to find the actual deal, what a rip.

Where can you get 1GB of ram for 30 bucks?

I just tried it out,
FREE UPGRADE! 1GB PC1066 RDRAM for the price of 256MB [add $59 or $2/month1]
though the starting price for a precision workstation is pretty expensive :(

That's insane if you're getting an RDRAM machine! (no stupid DDR vs. RDRAM posts thank you).

Edit: Oh wait they don't let you quadruple 512MB to 2GB.

$699 is easy to get, just deselect the MS Office and on the 2nd Page deselect the $199 extreme service contract and otherwise just keep removing stuff from the configuration. You get $799, but there is an extra $100 rebate. Then if you do the $200 rebate for not selecting quadruple memory you'll end up at $499 which isn't bad. I also noticed that if you select the lowest processor speed on the pre-configuration page it automatically deselects all the extra stuff and gives you the $699 after rebate machine.

It is a great deal that Dell does every 3-4 months. When you need a 1 GB workstation, the savings of the deal pays for the whole computer.

I still can't figure out how to get this deal :p
Go to Dell.com
Click on Small Business since the Precision systems are not offered in the Home section
Click on Workstations.
All of their non-laptop workstations have quadruple the memory free - choose one of those and click on the customize it link.

I don't know about that. Because even with RDRAM each 256MB module costs around $85 and 4 of those is about $340. You pay an extra $49 to get 256MB which quadruples to 1GB and you give up a $200 rebate. So you come out ahead by about $90 which is nice, but not enough to offset the even a small fraction of the value of the computer. If you look at as $290 in savings then it looks a lot better, but I think that Dell $200 rebates happen reasonably often. Great deal, but I don't think it's a once in 3-4 months type of deal.

Now if they quadrupled 512MB for free, then you'd literally be getting a free machine + cash to spend.
